Coffee: health risks and recommended daily intake revealed

The effects of coffee on our body are diverse and noticeable. Coffee is one of the most popular hot drinks in Germany and is consumed on average 3.5 cups per day. This high consumption raises the question of when it can have negative effects on our health.

Why does caffeine have an invigorating effect on us?

Caffeine is a stimulant that binds to certain cells and molecules in the body to block the effects of the fatigue messenger adenosine. This means we stay awake longer and more focused. Caffeine stimulates the body's functions, increases the willingness to act, dilates the bronchi and promotes concentration. However, the individual effects and metabolism of caffeine differ from person to person.

The recommendations for daily coffee consumption

According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), single doses of up to 200 mg of caffeine and a total daily intake of 400 mg are safe for healthy adults. A maximum consumption of 200 mg is recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women. This equates to around three to four cups of filter coffee per day.

Positive effects of moderate coffee consumption

Studies show that consuming three to five cups of coffee daily can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and Parkinson's. Coffee also has a positive effect on lung function, muscles and mental performance.

Negative effects of excessive coffee consumption

A study from the University of Southern Australia shows that consuming more than six cups of coffee per day can increase the risk of heart disease by up to 22 percent. There is also a connection between increased coffee consumption and reduced brain volume, which can increase the risk of dementia. Even moderate coffee consumption can cause symptoms such as insomnia, irritability, heartburn and digestive problems, depending on individual sensitivity.

It is therefore important to keep an eye on coffee consumption and pay attention to individual tolerance in order to benefit from the positive effects and avoid negative consequences.
