Political climate harms migrants: study reveals health risks!
A current study by the Cluster of Excellence “The Politics of Inequality” at the University of Konstanz, where Prof. Dr. Max Reinwald from the University of Mannheim, who was involved, is investigating the effects of right-wing populist election results on the health well-being and integration of migrant trainees. According to the results, regional support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is crucial for the experiences of discrimination and health consequences for migrant workers.
The study, which was carried out as part of the “Integration@work” project, analyzes the experiences of around 1,000 migrant trainees in a longitudinal study over a period of 13 weeks of training. Their experiences were compared with regional election data in Germany. The results show that in regions with high support for right-wing populist parties, migrants increasingly perceive derogatory attitudes from colleagues.
Political framework conditions and voter behavior
Right-wing populist parties have established themselves as an integral part of the party system in many countries, such as bpb reported. In some countries they are already governing parties or serious competitors for government. The success of these parties suggests that they are exploiting fundamental problems of modern democracies.
In the case of the AfD, it is clear that the voter profile has changed. Initially the party primarily attracted older voters from the lower middle class, but today it also reaches younger age cohorts and other income groups. AfD voters are often more dissatisfied with democracy and reject migration policy issues, which is a key factor in their voting decisions.
The AfD has positioned itself as the voice of those who want to express a fundamental rejection of government policy. The increasing establishment of right-wing populist parties such as the AfD is helping to mobilize voter turnout in Germany, but their presence in political discourse also has an impact on the differentiation between other parties.
