Youth Mental Health: Alarming Trends and Challenges

The mental health of young people is now more in focus than ever. An alarming study shows that teenagers and young adults are increasingly suffering from stress, exhaustion and lack of motivation. This development can not only be observed in Germany, but has also taken on worrying dimensions worldwide.

The study “Youth in Germany 2024” shows that over half of those under 30 in Germany experience symptoms of stress. In particular, 51 percent suffer from stress-related impairments, while 36 percent report exhaustion and 33 percent report lack of motivation. Another 17 percent regularly feel helpless. This is a worrying trend, especially since eleven percent of respondents report that they are currently receiving psychotherapeutic support.

Global Perspectives: A Worrying Phenomenon

International experts are also expressing concern about the decline in young people's mental health. An article in The Lancet Psychiatry notes: “There is evidence that the mental health of young people has declined in many countries over the past two decades.” This statement is not only an alarm signal for young people themselves, but it also warns of a broader societal danger that such developments could pose.

A decisive factor that contributes to the deterioration of mental health is the way young people view the future. Many young people fear that the economic situation will worsen, triggered by inflation, high costs of living and fears of poverty in old age. Political unrest and support for extreme political views place additional strain on psychological stability.

Social media and its influence

Another important aspect that cannot be missing from the discussion about mental health is social media. Experts from the Lancet Commission describe this as a potential source of danger. They increase feelings of isolation and have a negative impact on young people's identity development. The constant comparison with others and the associated unrealistic living standards can lead to significant emotional stress.

The requirements for better support and treatment of mentally stressed young people are clear: The therapy offerings must be significantly expanded and made more accessible. In many countries, including Germany, there is often a lack of the necessary availability of therapists and clinics that could help with anxiety and other mental illnesses.

The Lancet expert group calls for a rethink in politics and social services to improve support for young people. The goal should be to offer these generations the help they need to look mentally healthy and resilient into the future.

In Germany there are retreat options for people in psychological crises, such as telephone counseling, which offers support around the clock. Inquiries are anonymous and free - an important point of contact for many who need help without having to come out.

The increasing need for psychological support is undeniable and it is time for this issue to be brought to the center of public discussion. Understanding and early intervention are essential to enable today's youth to have better mental health.
