Fire in Mainz: Community intervention saves apartment building from worse
An unfortunate fire on a balcony in the heart of Mainz Neustadt triggered a major fire department operation last Sunday afternoon. Thanks to the quick reaction of the residents and the coordinated action of the rescue workers, something worse was prevented.
The residents handed over the key to the burning apartment directly to the operations manager and informed them that there was no one left in the affected unit. In addition, the smoke exhaust had already been activated, which helped protect the stairwell from heavy smoke.
To ensure that the fire did not spread unnoticed, the facade had to be opened to control the balcony fire on the third floor. The smoke development affected several neighboring apartments, which could only be safely entered again after clearance from the fire department. The affected apartment itself was temporarily uninhabitable due to smoke and heat.
The exact cause of the fire and the damage caused are currently being investigated by the police. A total of around 40 emergency services from the Mainz professional fire brigade, the city and Weisenau volunteer fire brigade, the police and the rescue service were involved in the operation.
Thanks to the quick action of everyone involved, something worse was prevented, and the solidarity of the community helped save the apartment building from major damage.
