Loneliness in Germany: A growing danger for all age groups!

An expert warns about the health risks that loneliness can pose. Lonely people are therefore at a higher risk of various mental and physical illnesses. Older people are particularly at risk, but more and more young people are also reporting their loneliness. This development is worrying as it can lead to serious health problems in the long term, such as the Rhine Palatinate reported.

Loneliness has become more urgent due to the corona pandemic. One of the effects of the pandemic is a significant increase in feelings of loneliness among the population. In March 2020, during the first lockdown, 40 percent of people living in Germany said they felt lonely at least sometimes. This number even rose to 42 percent in 2021 during the second lockdown the FAZ communicates.

Measures against loneliness

The Federal Ministry for Family Affairs has already planned measures to support those affected. Federal Minister for Family Affairs Lisa Paus (Greens) emphasizes the need to offer support to lonely people in difficult times. This not only affects older people, but also increasingly younger generations. Paus appealed for society to stand together and look out for each other so as not to endanger social cohesion.

The reports show that loneliness is a serious problem that needs to be actively addressed. Experts recommend paying attention to the signals of people around you and counteracting their isolation.
