Sun protection myths debunked: fact check for the summer

What do the sunscreen myths hide? A close look at reality

Summer lures us outside again, and with it comes the numerous myths surrounding sunscreen. But what is really behind the claims? We take a close look at five common assumptions and clarify what is true and what is not.

Theme:

A consumer products company reveals the truth about the most popular sunscreen narrative.

Legend:

The idea that sunscreen prolongs sun protection has become entrenched in society.

Experts point out that it's essential to apply enough sunscreen - about four heaping tablespoons for an adult. However, reapplying cannot renew the sun protection once the maximum protection period has been reached, explains dermatologist Christoph Liebich.

Reality:

According to the opinion of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection, consumers should apply sunscreen regularly - at least every two hours. And always after bathing or drying off.

Claim:

A day cream can serve as light sun protection.

Evaluation:

It depends on the day cream.

In order to have a reliable sun protection effect, a day cream must contain a UV filter, emphasizes Kerstin Effers from the North Rhine-Westphalia Consumer Center. A high sun protection factor is advisable, although day creams can also provide lower protection if applied in sufficient quantities.

Thesis:

Pre-tanning in a solarium is an effective form of sun protection.

Examination:

Incorrect.

According to dermatologist Liebich, going to the solarium only leads to a superficial tan. There is also increased radiation exposure, especially for minors.

Offer:

Vegan diet as protection against sunburn – a myth or reality?

Study:

Eating a purely plant-based diet is by no means a complete substitute for protection against sunburn. Although certain vitamins in vegan foods can support skin, experts strongly recommend using sunscreen as your main protection.

Theses:

Can sunscreen expire?

Solution:

That's right. A look at the shelf life of sunscreens reveals that they become less effective over time and can even contain carcinogenic substances. It is therefore essential to dispose of old sunscreen and use fresh products.

Always stay informed and enjoy the sun safely!
