What is Astepro?

Astepro nasal spray prevents sneezing, itching, runny nose and other nasal allergy symptoms.

Astepro nasal spray is used to treat seasonal allergies in adults and children 2 years and older, and year-round allergies in adults and children 6 months and older.

Warnings

Astepro nasal spray may affect your thinking or reactions. Be careful when driving or doing anything that requires your attention. Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you regularly take other medicines that make you sleepy (such as cold or allergy medicines, sedatives, narcotic pain medications, sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, and medicines for seizures, depression, or anxiety). They may increase the drowsiness caused by Astepro.

Drinking alcohol can increase certain side effects of Astepro. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or worsen while using Astepro. Stop using this medication and call your doctor immediately if you experience a fast or irregular heartbeat, chest tightness, or shortness of breath.

Before you take this medicine

Before using Astepro nasal spray, tell your doctor about any medical conditions or allergies you have.

It is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Using Astepro while breastfeeding may cause your breast milk to taste bitter. If you are breast-feeding while using this medicine, watch for signs that your baby is not also breast-feeding. Talk to your doctor about the best way to feed your baby.

How should I use Astepro?

Use Astepro Nasal Spray exactly as directed on the label or as prescribed by your doctor.

Before first use, squeeze the bottle away from your face at least twice until a fine mist is created. Repeat this whenever the nasal spray has not been used for more than 3 days.

How to use the nasal spray:

  • With your head upright, insert the tip of the bottle into the nostril and squeeze the other nostril closed. Inhale and gently spray the medicine into your nose. Use in your other nostril when directed.

  • If the spray gets into your eyes, mouth, or skin, rinse with water.

  • Do not blow your nose for a few minutes.

Do not allow a small child to use this medicine without the help of an adult.

Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or worsen.

Store this medicine upright at room temperature. Do not freeze.

Throw away the medicine after using 200 sprays, even if there is medicine left in the bottle.

Dosage information

Usual Adult Dose for Allergic Rhinitis:

0.1% spray: 1 or 2 sprays in each nostril twice daily
0.15% spray: 1 or 2 sprays in each nostril twice daily or 2 sprays in each nostril once daily

Use: Seasonal allergic rhinitis

0.15% spray: 2 sprays in each nostril twice daily

Use: Permanent allergic rhinitis

Usual Pediatric Dose for Allergic Rhinitis:

2 to 5 years:
0.1% spray: 1 spray in each nostril twice daily
6 to 11 years:
0.1% spray and 0.15% spray: 1 spray in each nostril twice daily

Use: Seasonal allergic rhinitis

6 months to 5 years:
0.1% spray: 1 spray in each nostril twice daily
6 to 11 years:
0.1% spray and 0.15% spray: 1 spray in each nostril twice daily

Use: Permanent allergic rhinitis

What happens if I miss a dose?

Use the medicine as soon as possible, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next dose. Do not use two doses at the same time.

What happens if I overdose?

Using too much Astepro nasal spray may cause drowsiness.

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222 if someone accidentally swallows the medicine.Swallowing Astepro could cause serious harm to a child.

What should I avoid while taking Astepro?

Avoid getting this medicine in your eyes.

Avoid driving and dangerous activities until you know how this medicine affects you. Your reactions may be affected.

Avoid alcohol.

Side effects of Astepro

If necessary, get emergency medical helpSigns of an allergic reaction to Astepro:hives; difficult breathing; Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

If necessary, call your doctor immediatelySigns of an ear infection:

  • ear pain or feeling full;

  • discharge from the ear;

  • difficulty hearing; or

  • Fever.

Common side effects of Astepro may include:

  • drowsiness, tiredness;

  • a bitter taste in the mouth;

  • pain in the mouth or throat;

  • nose pain or discomfort, nosebleeds;

  • Cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, cough, sore throat;

  • fever, headache;

  • Vomit; or

  • itchy skin around the nose.

What other drugs affect Astepro?

Using Astepro with other medications that make you sleepy may worsen this effect. Consult your doctor before taking opioid medications, sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, or anti-anxiety or seizure medications.

Other medications may interact with azelastine nasal, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking.
