What is clindamycin topical?

Topical side effects of clindamycin

Topical use of clindamycin can cause serious side effects. Stop using topical clindamycin and call your doctor immediately if you have:

  • severe redness, itching or dryness of the treated skin areas; or

  • severe stomach pain, watery or bloody diarrhea (even if this occurs months after your last dose).

Common side effects of topical clindamycin may include:

  • burning, itching, dryness, peeling or redness of the treated skin; or

  • oily skin.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You can report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Warnings

You should not use clindamycin topically if you have ulcerative colitis or enteritis (inflammation of your intestines), or if you have ever had severe diarrhea caused by antibiotics.

Before you take this medicine

You should not use clindamycin topically if you are allergic to clindamycin or lincomycin or if you have:

  • Inflammation of your intestines (also called enteritis);

  • ulcerative colitis; or

  • if you have ever had severe diarrhea caused by antibiotics.

Tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • eczema or other skin problems; or

  • an intestinal disorder.

It is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

If you are breastfeeding, tell your doctor if you notice diaper rash, diarrhea, or signs of stomach pain in the breastfed baby. If you use clindamycinfoamAvoid areas that could come into contact with the baby's mouth.

Topical use of clindamycin is not approved for people under 12 years of age.

How should I use clindamycin topical?

Follow all instructions on your prescription label and read any medication guides or instructions for use. Use the medicine exactly as directed.

Do not take orally. Topical medicines should only be used on the skin. Do not use on open wounds or on sunburned, windburned, dry or irritated skin.

Carefully read and follow all instructions for use that come with your medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you do not understand these instructions.

Wash your hands before and after using this medicine.

Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or worsen.

If you need surgery, tell your surgeon that you are currently using this medicine. You may need to take a short break.

Store at room temperature, protected from moisture and heat.

Clindamycin topical dosage information

Usual Adult Dose for Acne:

Recommended dose: Apply a thin film to the affected area(s) twice daily

Comment:
-More than one pledget can be used at the same time (e.g. larger areas).

Use:
-Treatment of acne vulgaris

Usual Adult Dose for Bacterial Vaginosis:

Non-pregnant patients:
Vaginal cream: 1 applicator intravaginally once at bedtime for 3 consecutive days
Vaginal suppository: Insert 1 suppository intravaginally once daily at bedtime for 3 to 7 consecutive days

Pregnant patients:
-Vaginal cream: 1 applicator intravaginally once at bedtime for 7 consecutive days

Comment:
-A diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis should be confirmed before initiating therapy.

Used:
-Treatment of bacterial vaginosis in non-pregnant women
-Treatment of bacterial vaginosis in non-pregnant women and pregnant women in the second or third trimester

Usual Pediatric Dose for Acne:

12 years and older:
Recommended dose: Apply a thin film to the affected area(s) twice daily

Comment:
-More than one pledget can be used at the same time (e.g. larger areas).

Use:
-Treatment of acne vulgaris

What happens if I miss a dose?

Use the medicine as soon as possible, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next dose. Do not apply two doses at the same time.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222.

Symptoms of overdose include bloody or watery diarrhea, which can occur if you absorb clindamycin topically through the skin and apply too much.

What should I avoid when taking clindamycin topical?

Do not smoke while using clindamycin topicalfoam, or immediately after application. The contents of the foam canister are flammable.

Antibiotic medications can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have watery or bloody diarrhea, call your doctor. Do not use antidiarrheal medication unless your doctor recommends it.

If this medicine gets into your eyes or mouth, rinse with water.

Do not use other medicated skin products unless your doctor tells you to. Avoid using skin products that may cause irritation, such as: B. harsh soaps, shampoos or skin cleansers, hair dyes or permanent chemicals, hair removers or waxes, and skin products with alcohol, spices, astringents or lime.

What other drugs will affect topical clindamycin use?

Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially:

  • Erythromycin (taken or applied to the skin).
