What is Doan's PM?

Doans PM is a combination medicine used to treat back pain that keeps you awake during your normal sleeping hours.

Doans PM may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Doan's PM Side Effects

If necessary, get emergency medical helpSigns of an allergic reaction: hives; wheezing, difficulty breathing; dizziness; Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Doan's PM can cause serious side effects. Stop using Doans PM and call your doctor immediately if you have:

  • severe drowsiness;

  • painful or difficult urination;

  • ringing in the ears, hearing loss;

  • Confusion; or

  • Signs of stomach bleeding - lightheadedness, persistent stomach pain, bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.

Common side effects of Doans PM may include:

  • Sleepiness;

  • dry eyes, blurred vision;

  • dry mouth, nose or throat;

  • decreased urination;

  • heartburn, nausea, vomiting, flatulence;

  • Constipation;

  • feeling restless or agitated (especially in children); or

  • Daytime sleepiness or “hangover” feeling after nighttime use.

Warnings

Use this medicine exactly as directed.Taking too much diphenhydramine can cause serious heart problems, seizures, coma, or death.

Magnesium salicylate can cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal.Call your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of stomach bleeding, such as dizziness, black or bloody stools, or coughing up blood.

Ask a doctor before giving this medicine to a child under 12 years of age.Do not give this medicine to a child or teenager who has fever, flu symptoms, or chickenpox.Do not use this medicine to make a child sleepy.

Before you take this medicine

You should not use Doans PM if you are allergic to aspirin or other salicylates.

Do not give this medicine to a child or teenager who has fever, flu symptoms, or chickenpox.Salicylates can cause Reye's syndrome, a serious and sometimes fatal condition in children.Ask a doctor before giving this medicine to a child under 12 years of age.

Magnesium salicylate can cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal.These conditions may occur without warning during use of magnesium salicylate, especially in older adults.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist whether it is safe to use this medicine if you have ever had:

  • bleeding problems;

  • heartburn, stomach ulcer, or stomach bleeding;

  • an enlarged prostate or problems urinating;

  • asthma or COPD, coughing up mucus or smoking-induced cough, emphysema or chronic bronchitis;

  • heart disease, high blood pressure;

  • Liver disease, cirrhosis of the liver, or if you drink more than 3 alcoholic drinks per day;

  • kidney disease;

  • arthritis, gout;

  • Diabetes;

  • Glaucoma; or

  • a thyroid disease.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a doctor before using this medicine.

Taking this medicine during the last 20 weeks of pregnancy may cause serious kidney problems in the unborn baby or bleeding in the mother or baby during delivery.

How should I take Doans PM?

Use exactly as directed on the label or as prescribed by your doctor.

Taking too much diphenhydramine can cause serious heart problems, seizures, coma, or death.

Take this medicine with a full glass of water at bedtime.

Take it with food if this medicine upsets your stomach.

Do not use this medicine to make a child sleepy.

Stop taking this medicine and call your doctor if your pain does not improve or if it gets worse after 10 days of using this medicine.Tell your doctor if you have a fever that lasts longer than 3 days or if you notice redness or swelling.

If you need surgery or dental treatment, tell the surgeon or dentist in advance that you are using Doans PM. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.

This medicine may produce unusual results in certain medical tests. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using Doans PM.

Store at room temperature, protected from moisture and heat.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Because Doans PM is used as needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next dose. Do not use two doses at the same time.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222.A diphenhydramine overdose can be fatal.

Symptoms of overdose may include vomiting, confusion, severe sleepiness, ringing in the ears, no urination, very dry eyes and mouth, dilated pupils, fast heartbeat, tremor, restlessness, hallucinations, or seizures.

What should I avoid while taking Doans PM?

Avoid driving and dangerous activities until you know how Doan's PM affects you. Your reactions may be affected.

Also consult a doctor or pharmacist before using other medicines that may contain diphenhydramine or magnesium salicylate-like ingredients (such as aspirin or other salicylates). These include medications for pain, fever, swelling, sleep aids, cold/allergy symptoms, or anti-itch medications used on the skin.Using too much diphenhydramine can result in a fatal overdose.

Avoid alcohol. Heavy drinking can increase your risk of stomach bleeding.

What other drugs will affect Doan's PM?

Ask a doctor or pharmacist before using this medication with other medications that may cause drowsiness (e.g., opioid medications, sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, or anti-anxiety or seizure medications).

Ask a doctor or pharmacist if it is safe for you to use Doans PM if you also use:

  • a blood thinner – warfarin, Coumadin, Jantoven;

  • other NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) – aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), celecoxib, diclofenac, indomethacin, meloxicam and others;
