Doxycycline (subgingival)

Uses for Doxycycline

Doxycycline is used to treat periodontitis (a disease of the gums). Periodontitis is caused by bacteria that grow below the gum line. Doxycycline works by preventing bacterial growth. Reducing the amount of bacteria helps reduce inflammation and swelling in the mouth and bleeding around the teeth. Doxycycline is placed into deep gum pockets next to your teeth to reduce the depth of the pockets.

Before using doxycycline

When deciding whether to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the benefits it produces. This is a decision that you and your doctor will make. The following should be noted with this medicine:

Allergies

Tell your doctor if you have ever had an unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Also tell your doctor if you have other allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives or animals. For over-the-counter products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.

Pediatrics

Use in infants and children under 8 years of age is not recommended. Tetracyclines such as doxycycline can cause permanent tooth discoloration and slow bone growth. The safety and effectiveness of doxycycline in children 8 years and older have not been established.

geriatrics

There is no information available on the relationship between age and the effects of doxycycline in geriatric patients.

Breastfeeding

There are insufficient studies in women to determine the risk to infants when using this drug while breast-feeding. Weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks before taking this medication while breastfeeding.

Drug interactions

Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines can be used together, although interactions may occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose or other precautions may be necessary. If you are receiving this medicine, it is particularly important that your doctor knows whether you are taking any of the medicines listed below. The following interactions were selected for their potential significance and are not necessarily exhaustive.

Interactions with food/tobacco/alcohol

Certain medicines should not be taken during or near food or consumption of certain foods because interactions may occur. Consuming alcohol or tobacco with certain medications can also lead to interactions. Discuss using your medicine with food, alcohol or tobacco with your doctor.

Other medical problems

The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of this medicine. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:

Proper use of doxycycline

The doxycycline periodontal system is inserted by your dentist into one or more deep gum pockets next to your teeth. A dental cast or adhesive is placed over it to hold the system in place. The treatment can be repeated four months later.

The duration of treatment for the doxycycline periodontal system is seven days after placement by your dentist. If the system becomes loose or falls out before 7 days, contact your dentist.

The periodontal system with doxycycline does not need to be removed by the dentist; it will dissolve. The dental cast or adhesive that holds the system in place may fall out naturally. However, if the dental dressing or adhesive is still present after 7 days, it should be removed by the dentist.

After putting the medicine in your mouth, avoid any actions that could cause the medicine to leak out. For example:

Precautions when using doxycycline

It is very important that your dentist check your progress while you are receiving this medicine. Don't miss a dentist appointment.

Using this medicine during pregnancy (especially in the last half of pregnancy) may harm your unborn baby. Use an effective form of birth control to prevent pregnancy. If you think you have become pregnant while using this medicine, tell your doctor immediately.

If you experience pain, swelling, or other problems in the treated areas, contact your dentist as soon as possible.

Oral contraceptives (birth control pills) that contain estrogen may not work properly if you take them while treating the periodontal system with doxycycline. To prevent pregnancy, use another form of contraception (e.g., condoms, diaphragms, or contraceptive foams or jellies) while the periodontal system is intact with doxycycline. If you have any questions about this, contact your doctor.

Do not floss or brush treated teeth for 7 days after treatment with doxycycline. Brushing or flossing can cause the system to become loose or fall out.

Tetracyclines such as doxycycline can cause your skin to be more sensitive to sunlight than normal. Even short-term exposure to the sun can cause a rash, itching, redness or other discoloration of the skin, or severe sunburn. For a period of 7 days after administration of doxycycline to the periodontal system:

After the 7-day periodontal system treatment period with doxycycline, you may continue to be sensitive to sunlight or sunlamps for 2 weeks to several months or longer. If you experience a severe reaction, contact your dentist or doctor.
