What is Dristan 12-hour?
Dristan 12-Hour (for the nose) is used to temporarily relieve nasal congestion (stuffy nose) caused by allergies or colds.
Dristan 12-Hour may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Side effects of Dristan 12 hours
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these problemsSigns of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Dristan 12-Hour can cause serious side effects. Stop using Dristan 12-Hour and call your doctor immediately if you have:

persistent or worsening symptoms;
-
severe burning or stinging in the nose after using the nasal spray;
-
chest pain, fast or uneven heartbeat; or
-
severe headache, ringing in the ears, anxiety, confusion, or shortness of breath.
Common side effects of Dristan 12-Hour may include:
-
mild burning or stinging in the nose;
-
Sneeze; or
-
runny nose.

Stop using Dristan 12-Hour and call your doctor immediately if symptoms persist or worsen, or if you experience severe burning or stinging in your nose after using the nasal spray
Before you take this medicine
You should not use Dristan 12-Hour if you are allergic to it.
Ask a doctor or pharmacist if it is safe for you to take this medicine if you have other medical conditions, especially:
-
heart disease, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease;
-
Diabetes;
-
a thyroid disease; or
-
enlarged prostate or problems urinating.
FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether Dristan 12-Hour will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication.
It is not known whether oxymetazoline passes nasally into breast milk or whether it could harm a breastfed baby. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby.
How should I use Dristan 12 hours?
Use exactly as directed on the label or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller quantities or for longer than recommended.
Using the medication for too long or too often may worsen your symptoms or cause nasal congestion to go away and then come back.
Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 3 days of treatment.
Do not share this medication with another person, even if they have the same symptoms as you. Sharing a nasal spray bottle can spread an infection.
How to use the nasal drops (nasal solution):

Blow your nose gently. Tilt your head back as far as possible or lie down and let your head hang over the edge of the bed. Hold the pipette over your nose and place the correct number of drops into your nose.

Sit up, tilt your head slightly forward, then gently move it left and right. Sit with your head tilted forward for a few minutes.

Avoid sneezing or blowing your nose for at least several minutes after using the nasal drops.
How to use the nasal spray:

Blow your nose gently. Hold your head upright and insert the tip of the bottle into one nostril. Pinch your other nostril shut with your finger. Inhale quickly and gently spray the medicine into your nose. Then use the spray in your other nostril.

Do not blow your nose for at least a few minutes after using the nasal spray.
Do not use the nasal spray more than 2 times in 24 hours.
Wipe the tip of the spray bottle with a clean cloth, but do not wash it with soap or water.
Store at room temperature, protected from moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222 if someone accidentally swallows the medication.
Keep Dristan 12-Hour out of the reach of children. Certain nasal medications can cause serious medical problems in a young child who accidentally sucks on the nasal spray bottle or swallows medication from the nasal spray bottle.
What should I avoid when using Dristan 12-Hour?
Follow your doctor's instructions regarding any food, drink, or activity restrictions.
What other drugs will affect Dristan 12-hour?
Ask a doctor or pharmacist if it is safe for you to use Dristan 12-Hour if you are also taking any of the following medicines:
-
an antidepressant – amitriptyline, clomipramine, desipramine, doxepin, imipramine, nortriptyline;
-
Ergot drugs – ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, ergonovine, methylergonovine; or
-
an MAO inhibitor – isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine.
This list is not complete and other medications may interact with Dristan 12-Hour. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take. This includes prescription, over-the-counter, vitamin and herbal products. Do not start taking a new medication without telling your doctor.
