Uses for Dynacin
Minocycline capsules are used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body. It is also used to treat anthrax infections and other infections in patients who cannot receive penicillins.
Minocycline belongs to a class of medicines called tetracycline antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria or preventing them from growing. However, this medicine does not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.
This medicine is only available with a doctor's prescription.
Before using Dynacin
When deciding whether to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the benefits it produces. This is a decision that you and your doctor will make. The following should be noted with this medicine:
Allergies
Tell your doctor if you have ever had an unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Also tell your doctor if you have other allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives or animals. For over-the-counter products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.
Pediatrics
Studies conducted to date have not shown any pediatric-specific problems that would limit the benefit of minocycline extended-release capsules and tablets in children 12 years of age or older. However, safety and effectiveness have not been established in children under 12 years of age.
Minocycline can cause permanent tooth discoloration and slow bone growth. This medicine should not be given to children under 8 years of age unless directed by the pediatrician.
geriatrics
Studies conducted to date have not shown any geriatric-specific problems that would limit the benefit of minocycline in the elderly. However, older patients are at higher risk of kidney, liver, or heart problems, which may require caution and dose adjustment in patients receiving minocycline.
Breastfeeding
Studies suggest that this medication may alter milk production or composition. If no alternative to this medication is prescribed, monitor the infant for side effects and adequate milk intake.
Drug interactions
Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines can be used together, although interactions may occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose or other precautions may be necessary. If you are taking this medicine, it is particularly important that your doctor knows whether you are taking any of the medicines listed below. Other medical problems
The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of this medicine. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:

Proper use of Dynacin
Take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, or take it for longer than your doctor prescribed. This may increase the risk of side effects. This medicine is not intended for long-term use.
This medicine comes with a package leaflet. Read and follow the instructions carefully. Ask your doctor if you have any questions.
Swallow the capsule, extended-release capsule or tablet whole with water. Do not crush, break or chew it.
You can take this medicine with or without food. Taking this medicine with food may reduce the risk of irritation or an ulcer in the esophagus (tube that connects the mouth to the stomach).
To help your infection heal completely, continue taking this medicine throughout your treatment, even if you feel better after a few days. If you stop taking this medicine too soon, your symptoms may come back.

The dose of this medicine is different for different patients. Follow your doctor's instructions or the label directions. The following information includes average doses of this medicine only. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to.
The amount of medicine you take depends on the strength of the medicine. In addition, the number of doses you take each day, the time between doses, and how long you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
storage
Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Protect from freezing.
Keep away from children.
Do not keep medications that are outdated or no longer needed.
Ask your doctor how to throw away medicines you don't use.
Precautions when using Dynacin
It is very important that your doctor checks you or your child's progress at regular visits. This will help your doctor determine whether the medicine is working properly and decide whether you should continue taking it. Blood and urine tests may be needed to check for adverse effects.
If you or your child's symptoms do not improve or worsen after 12 weeks of treatment, contact your doctor.
Using this medicine during pregnancy may harm your unborn baby. The medicine can also cause birth defects if the father takes it while his sexual partner becomes pregnant. If pregnancy occurs while using this medication, tell your doctor immediately.
Birth control pills may not work as well while you are taking minocycline. To prevent pregnancy, you should use an additional form of contraception along with the pill. Other forms include condoms, a diaphragm, or contraceptive foam or jelly.
This medicine may darken the color of your skin, nails, eyes, teeth, gums, or scars. Talk to your doctor if you or your child have any concerns.
Minocycline can cause diarrhea, which can be severe in some cases. It may occur 2 months or longer after you stop taking this medicine. Do not take any medication to treat diarrhea without first consulting your doctor. Antidiarrheal medications can make diarrhea worse or make it last longer. If you or your child have any questions about this, or if mild diarrhea persists or worsens, contact your doctor.
Contact your doctor immediately if you or your child have pain or tenderness in the upper abdomen, pale stools, dark urine, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, or yellow eyes or skin. These could be symptoms of serious liver disease.
This medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness in some people. Make sure you know how you react to this combination of medicines before driving, operating machinery, or doing other activities that could be dangerous until you know how this medicine affects you.
This medicine may cause increased pressure in your head, which may lead to permanent vision loss. Contact your doctor immediately if you or your child have a severe headache, blurred vision, or problems with your vision.
Contact your doctor immediately if fever, rash, joint pain, or fatigue occurs. These could be symptoms of an autoimmune syndrome, in which the body attacks itself.
Minocycline may cause your skin to be more sensitive to sunlight than usual. Even short-term exposure to the sun can cause a rash, itching, redness or other discoloration of the skin, or severe sunburn. When you start taking this medicine:

If you experience a severe reaction from the sun, contact your doctor.
This medicine can cause serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis requires immediate medical attention. The most serious signs of this reaction are very rapid or irregular breathing, shortness of breath, or fainting. Other signs may include changes in facial skin, very fast but irregular heartbeat or pulse, hive-like swellings on the skin, and swelling or puffiness of the eyelids or around the eyes. If these side effects occur, get emergency help immediately.
Before you have a medical examination, tell your doctor that you or your child are taking this medicine. The results of some tests may be affected by this medicine.
If you plan to have children, talk to your doctor before using this medicine. This medicine may affect the process of sperm production in men.
Do not take any other medicines unless you have discussed this with your doctor. This includes both prescription and nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medications and herbal or vitamin supplements.
Dynacin side effects
In addition to the necessary effects, a medicine may also have some undesirable effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, medical attention may be required if they occur.
Consult your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:
