Iron maltol side effects

Stop taking ferrous maltol and call your doctor immediatelyif you suffer from inflammatory bowel disease and the symptoms become more severesuch as diarrhea, stomach cramps, blood in the stool, loss of appetite or weight loss.
Common iron maltol side effects may include:

stomach pain, bloating, bloating, nausea, vomiting;

diarrhea, constipation; or
-
Changes in the color of your stools.

Warnings
Use only as directed. Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines or have any other medical conditions or allergies.
Before you take this medicine
You should not use ferrous maltol if you are allergic to it or if you have:
-
Hemochromatosis or iron overload (accumulation of excess iron); or
-
if you have received repeated blood transfusions.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had inflammatory bowel disease.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Ferrous maltol is absorbed in a way that is unlikely to be harmful to the unborn child. Untreated iron deficiency during pregnancy can increase the risk of anemia (low red blood cells), premature birth, or low birth weight.The benefits of treating iron deficiency with ferrous maltol may outweigh any risks to the baby.
Ferrous maltol is unlikely to pass into breast milk. Ask your doctor about using ferrous maltol if you are breastfeeding.
Not approved for use by persons under 18 years of age.
How should I take ferrous maltol?
Follow all instructions on your prescription label and read any medication guides or instructions for use. Use the medicine exactly as directed.
Take on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
Swallow the capsule whole and do not crush, chew, break, or open it.
Ferrous maltol is usually taken for 12 weeks.
You may need medical testing to determine how long you should use ferrous maltol.
Store at room temperature, protected from moisture and heat.
Iron maltol dosage information
Usual adult dosage for iron deficiency:
30 mg orally twice daily, 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal

Comments:
-The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the iron deficiency, but generally at least 12 weeks of therapy is required.
– Continue treatment until ferritin levels are within normal range.

What happens if I miss a dose?
Call your doctor for instructions if you miss a dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Get medical help immediately if a child accidentally swallows a tablet.An overdose of iron can be fatal to a young child.
Symptoms of overdose may include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cold or clammy skin, confusion, restlessness, drowsiness, rapid breathing, or irregular heartbeat.
What should I avoid when taking iron maltol?
Do not take dimercaprol or iron supplements or vitamin/mineral supplements that your doctor has not prescribed or recommended for you.
What other drugs affect ferrous maltol?
Taking ferrous maltol and other oral medications at the same time may affect the way your body absorbs each medication. Take your iron maltol dose 4 hours before or 4 hours after taking other medications by mouth.
Other medications can affect ferrous maltol, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking.
