What is Eletriptan?

Eletriptan should not be used to treat a frequent tension-type headache, a headache that causes loss of movement on one side of the body, or a headache that seems different from your usual migraine headache.Use Eletriptan only if your condition has been confirmed by a doctor as a migraine headache.

Eletriptan may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Eletriptan side effects

Eletriptan can cause serious side effects. Call your doctor immediately if you have:

  • fast, slow, or uneven heart rate;

  • sudden severe stomach pain (especially after meals), constipation or diarrhea, weight loss;

  • fever, bloody diarrhea;

  • numbness, tingling, coldness, or burning pain in your feet or toes;

  • feeling of tightness or heaviness in the legs, pale or bluish appearance in the fingers or toes;

  • severe headache, blurred vision, throbbing in the neck or ears; or

  • Signs of a stroke - sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of the body), sudden severe headache, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance.

Eletriptan can cause serious side effects. Stop using Eletriptan and call your doctor immediately if you have:

  • Heart attack symptoms – pain or pressure in the chest, pain spreading to the jaw or shoulder, nausea, sweating.

Seek immediate medical attention if you have symptoms of serotonin syndrome, such as:Restlessness, hallucinations, fever, sweating, shaking, fast heartbeat, muscle stiffness, twitching, loss of coordination, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

Common side effects of eletriptan may include:

  • dizziness, drowsiness;

  • nausea; or

  • Weakness, tiredness.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You can report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Warnings

You should not use Eletriptan if you have ever had heart disease, coronary artery disease, circulatory problems, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe liver disease, a heart attack or stroke, or if you have a headache that seems different than your usual migraine headache.

Do not take eletriptan within 24 hours before or after using another migraine medicine.

Do not use eletriptan within 72 hours before or after taking: clarithromycin, troleandomycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, nefazodone, ritonavir, or nelfinavir.

Before you take this medicine

You should not use Eletriptan if you are allergic to it or if you have:

  • heart problems or a stroke (including “mini-stroke”);

  • Circulatory problems in the legs, arms, stomach, intestines or kidneys;

  • a heart condition called Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome;

  • uncontrolled high blood pressure; or

  • a headache that seems different from your usual migraine headache.

Do not take eletriptan within 24 hours before or after using any other migraine medicine, including:

  • Drugs such as Eletriptan – Almotriptan, Frovatriptan, Naratriptan, Rizatriptan, Sumatriptan, Zolmitriptan and others; or

  • Ergot medicines – dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, ergonovine, methylergonovine.

Do not use eletriptan within 72 hours before or after taking: clarithromycin, troleandomycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, nefazodone, ritonavir, or nelfinavir.

Tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • liver or kidney disease;

  • heart problems or stroke; or

  • Risk factors for coronary heart disease (e.g. high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, menopause, smoking, family history of coronary heart disease, being overweight or age over 40 and male).

Make sure your doctor knows if you also take stimulants, opioid medications, herbal products, or medications for depression, mental illness, Parkinson's disease, migraines, serious infections, or to prevent nausea and vomiting. These medicines can interact with eletriptan and cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not known whether eletriptan will harm an unborn baby. However, migraine headaches during pregnancy can lead to complications such as high blood pressure or eclampsia (dangerous high blood pressure that can lead to medical problems in both mother and baby). The benefits of migraine treatment may outweigh the risks to the baby.

Breastfeeding may not be safe while using eletriptan. Ask your doctor about any risks.

Eletriptan is not approved for use by people under 18 years of age.

How should I take Eletriptan?

Follow all instructions on your prescription label and read any medication guides or instructions for use. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Use the medicine exactly as directed.

Take eletriptan as soon as you notice migraine symptoms.

After taking a tablet: If your headache does not go away completely or goes away and comes back, take a second tablet 2 hours after the first. Do not take more than 80 mg of eletriptan in 24 hours. If your symptoms have not improved, contact your doctor before taking any more tablets.

Call your doctor if your headache doesn't go away at all after taking the first Eletriptan tablet.

If you use Eletriptan for a long time, your heart function may need to be checked with an electrocardiograph or an EKG (sometimes called an EKG).

Store at room temperature, protected from moisture and heat.

Eletriptan dosage information

Usual adult dosage for migraines:

Use only after a clear diagnosis of migraine has been made

Initial dose: 20 mg or 40 mg once orally
- Provided there was some response to the first dose, a second dose may be given at least 2 hours later if the migraine recurs or symptoms recur.
Maximum dose: 80 mg in a 24 hour period

Comments:
-Dosage should be adjusted individually as reactions vary. In clinical trials, benefit was observed at doses of 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg; However, an increased incidence of side effects was observed at the 80 mg dose.
-This medication should not be used to treat basilar or hemiplegic migraines because these patients are at higher risk of stroke.
-The safety of treating an average of 3 or more migraine attacks in a 30-day period has not been established.

Application: For the acute treatment of migraines with or without aura.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Because Eletriptan is used as needed, there is no daily dosing schedule. Call your doctor immediately if your symptoms do not improve after using eletriptan.

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222.

What should I avoid while taking Eletriptan?

Avoid driving and dangerous activities until you know how eletriptan affects you. Your reactions may be affected.

What other drugs will affect eletriptan?

Tell your doctor about any other medicines you are taking, especially an antidepressant.

Other medications can affect eletriptan, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your doctor about all medications you are currently taking and any medications you are taking or stopping.
