Endari

What is Endari?

Endari is a medicinal food product used to supplement sources of glutamine in the diet. Endari is used to treat a deficiency of this medicine or a loss of glutamine caused by an injury or illness.

Endari is also used in combination with human growth hormone to treat short bowel syndrome.

Endari may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Endari side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these problemsSigns of an allergic reaction:hives; difficult breathing; Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Endari can cause serious side effects. Call your doctor immediately if you have:

  • chest pain;

  • hearing problems; or

  • Signs of infection such as fever, chills, sore throat, flu symptoms, mouth sores, unusual weakness.

Common side effects of Endari may include:

  • nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, flatulence;

  • swelling of hands or feet;

  • muscle or joint pain, back pain;

  • headache, dizziness, feeling tired;

  • mild rash or itching; or

  • dry mouth, runny nose, increased sweating.

Warnings

Follow all instructions on the label and packaging of your medicine. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies and any medications you take.

Before you take this medicine

To make sure Endari is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

  • liver disease; or

  • Kidney disease.

FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether Endari will harm an unborn baby.If you are pregnant, do not use Endari without medical advice.

It is not known whether glutamine passes into breast milk or whether it could harm a nursing baby.Do not use this medicine without medical advice if you are breast-feeding a baby.

How should I take Endari?

Use exactly as directed on the label or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller quantities or for longer than recommended.

To treat short bowel syndrome, you may need to take Endari six times a day for up to 16 weeks.

How many times you take Endari per day depends on the reason you are using it. Always follow your doctor's instructions.

TakeEndari powder for oral usewith a meal or snack unless otherwise specified.

TakeEndari tabletsOn an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.

Dissolve your dose of glutamine oral powder in at least 8 ounces of hot or cold liquid. You can also mix the powder with soft foods like pudding, applesauce, or yogurt. Stir the mixture and eat or drink everything immediately.

Do not pour dry Endari powder directly into a tube feed. Always mix the powder with water and inject it directly into the feeding tube using a syringe.

Frequent blood or urine tests may be necessary while using Endari.

Endari may only be part of a complete treatment program, which may also include a special diet, tube feeding, and infusions. It is very important that you follow the diet and medication plan created for you by your doctor or nutritionist.

Store at room temperature, protected from moisture and heat. Keep each dose of oral powder in the package until you are ready to use the medicine.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

An overdose of Endari is not expected to cause life-threatening symptoms.

What should I avoid when taking glutamine?

Follow your doctor's instructions regarding any food, drink, or activity restrictions.

What other drugs will affect Endari?

Other medications can interact with glutamine, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all medications you are taking now and any medications you are starting or stopping taking.
