What is ascorbic acid?
Ascorbic acid is also used to support antioxidant activity and proper immune system function to protect the body from disease.
Ascorbic acid can also be used for purposes not listed in this product guide.
Side effects of ascorbic acid

Ascorbic acid can cause serious side effects. Stop using ascorbic acid and call your doctor immediately if you have:

joint pain, feeling weak or tired, weight loss, stomach pain; or
-
Chills, fever, pain in the side or lower back, blood in the urine, painful or difficult urination.
Common side effects of Ester-C may include:

heartburn, stomach problems; or
-
Nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps.

Warnings
Follow all instructions on the product label and packaging. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies and any medications you take.
Before you take this medicine
You should not use ascorbic acid if you have ever had an allergic reaction to a vitamin C supplement.
Ask a doctor or pharmacist whether it is safe to use ascorbic acid if you have ever had:

if you smoke (smoking can reduce the effectiveness of ascorbic acid);
-
hereditary iron overload disorder (hemochromatosis); or
-
Kidney disease or a history of kidney stones.
Consult a doctor before using Ester-C if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
How should I use ascorbic acid?
Use exactly as directed on the label or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger quantities or for longer than recommended.
The recommended daily dose of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) changes with age. Follow your doctor's instructions. You can also find more information at the NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements or the USDA Nutrient Database for recommended daily allowances.
Drink plenty of fluids while taking ascorbic acid.
You must chew the chewable tablet before swallowing it.
Do not crush, chew or breakExtended-release capsule. Swallow it whole.
Measure liquid medications using the measuring device provided (not a kitchen spoon).
Keep the orally disintegrating tablet in the pack until you are ready to use it. Take the tablet out with dry hands and put it in your mouth. Allow the orally disintegrating tablet to dissolve in your mouth without chewing.
Do not suddenly stop using ascorbic acid after long-term use in high doses.or you could have a “conditional” vitamin C deficiency. Symptoms include bleeding gums, severe fatigue, and red or blue dot-like spots around your hair follicles. Follow your doctor's instructions for reducing the dose. A conditional vitamin C deficiency can be difficult to correct without medical supervision.
Store tightly closed at room temperature, protected from moisture and heat.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Use the medicine as soon as possible, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next dose. Do not use two doses at the same time.

What should I avoid when using ascorbic acid?
Follow your doctor's instructions regarding any food, drink, or activity restrictions.
What other drugs affect ascorbic acid?
Other medications can affect ascorbic acid, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking.
