Hip impingement

overview

Hip impingement occurs when the ball and socket of the hip joint do not fit together properly. The restricted movement damages cartilage and can cause pain and arthritis in young adults.

In some cases, the ball is too bulky to fit properly into the socket. Sometimes the outer edge of the pan extends so far that it covers too much of the ball. Hip impingement can also be caused by a combination of these two problems.

Most people with hip impingement experience groin pain during or after flexing the hip, such as when running, jumping, or sitting for long periods of time. You may also have difficulty bending your hips beyond a right angle.

Surgery may be necessary to prevent further hip injury.
