What is ammonium lactate?

Ammonium lactate is used to treat dry, flaky, and itchy skin.

Ammonium lactate may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Side effects of ammonium lactate

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these problemsSigns of an allergic reaction:hives; difficult breathing; Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Lac-Hydrin 5 can cause serious side effects. Stop using Lac-Hydrin 5 and call your doctor immediately if you have:

  • Severe redness or stinging where the medicine was applied.

Common Lac-Hydrin 5 side effects may include:

  • slight dryness or irritation of the skin after use; or

  • Bruising or discoloration of the treated skin.

Warnings

Follow all instructions on the label and packaging of your medicine. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies and any medications you take.

Before you take this medicine

You should not use this medication if you are allergic to ammonium lactate, glycerin, mineral oil, propylene glycol, or parabens.

Ammonium lactate may be more likely to cause skin irritation in people with fair or sensitive skin.

FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether Lac-Hydrin 5 will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication.

It is not known whether topical ammonium lactate passes into breast milk or whether it could harm a breastfed baby. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby.

Do not give Lac-Hydrin 5 to a child without medical advice.

How should I use ammonium lactate?

Ammonium lactate is usually used twice daily. Use exactly as directed on the label or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller quantities or for longer than recommended.

Shake the lotion form of this medication well just before use.

Wash your hands before and after using this medication unless you are using it to treat a hand condition.

Do not apply ammonium lactate to your face unless directed by your doctor.

Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve with Lac-Hydrin 5 or if they worsen.

Store at room temperature, protected from moisture and heat.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to use the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

An overdose is unlikely when using Lac-Hydrin 5.

What should I avoid when using ammonium lactate?

Do not take orally. Lac-Hydrin 5 is intended for use on the skin only. Do not use Lac-Hydrin 5 on open wounds or on sunburned, windburned, dry, cracked, or irritated skin.If this medication gets into your eyes, nose, mouth, rectum, or vagina, rinse with water.

What other drugs will affect ammonium lactate?

Other medications you take orally or inject are unlikely to have an effect on topically applied ammonium lactate. But many medications can interact with each other. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products.
