What is Lanolin Topical?

Lanolin topical (for the skin) is used to treat or prevent dry skin, itching, or other skin irritation caused by conditions such as diaper rash, skin burns from radiation therapy, and others.

Topical lanolin is also used to treat sore and cracked nipples caused by breastfeeding.

Topical lanolin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Topical side effects of lanolin

Stop using lanolin topical and call your doctor if you experience severe burning, stinging, redness, or irritation where the product was applied.

Less serious side effects may be more likely, and you may not have any at all.

Before you take this medicine

You should not use lanolin topically if you are allergic to it.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist if topical lanolin is safe for you if you have:

  • deep wounds or open wounds;

  • swelling, warmth, redness, oozing, or bleeding;

  • widespread skin irritation; or

  • any kind of allergy.

Lanolin is not expected to harm an unborn child. Seek the advice of a doctor if you are pregnant.

Topical lanolin is often applied to the skin in the nipple area to treat conditions caused by breastfeeding. This product is not expected to cause harm to a nursing baby.Use only as directed.

How should I take lanolin topically?

Lanolin for topical use is available in cream or ointment form. Use your medicine exactly as directed on the label or as directed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller quantities or for longer than recommended.

Do not take orally. Topical lanolin is intended for use on the skin only.If this product gets into your eyes, nose, mouth, rectum, or vagina, rinse with water.

Apply a small amount of lanolin topically to the affected area and rub gently.

How to use lanolin topically for sore nipples: Apply a pea-sized amount to the entire nipple area after each feeding. You do not need to wash off the topical lanolin before breastfeeding again.

When using lanolin topically to treat or prevent diaper rash: Clean the diaper area well and allow it to dry thoroughly before applying the medicine. Apply with every diaper change if necessary.

To treat or prevent skin burns from radiation therapy: Ask your doctor what brand to use and when to use it (before or after each radiation treatment).

Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or worsen with topical lanolin use.

Store at room temperature, protected from moisture and heat. Keep the bottle or tube tightly closed when not in use.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Because this product is used as needed, there is no daily dosing schedule. Seek medical advice if your condition does not improve after using lanolin topically.

What happens if I overdose?

An overdose is unlikely.

What should I avoid when taking lanolin topically?

Avoid getting lanolin topically in your eyes.

What other drugs will affect topical use of lanolin?

Other medications can interact with topical lanolin, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all medications you are taking now and any medications you are starting or stopping taking.
