What is Likmez?

Likmez has been approved to treat:

• Trichomoniasis (eine sexuell übertragbare Infektion) bei Erwachsenen

Metronidazole is thought to exert its effects by first diffusing into the cytoplasm of the anaerobic bacteria, where it is then activated and reduced to a short-lived nitroso free radical that can interact with DNA, resulting in loss of helical DNA structure, strand breaks, and bacterial death.

Likmez is rapidly absorbed after oral administration and peak concentrations are reached between 15 minutes and 6 hours after administration (average time: 45 minutes). Likmez was approved by the FDA on September 25, 2023. It belongs to the class of drugs known as antimicrobial nitroimidazoles.

Warnings

Do not take Likmez if you have a history of hypersensitivity reactions to Likmez, metronidazole, or other nitroimidazole medicines such as secnidazole or tinidazole

Should not be taken by people who have taken disulfiram within the last two weeks.

Do not drink alcohol or take any products containing propylene glycol during treatment with Likmez and for at least 3 days after completion of the course.

Seizures and other nervous system abnormalities such as encephalopathy, meningitis and peripheral neuropathy have been reported in patients treated with metronidazole. You should stop using Likmez immediately if you experience neurological symptoms such as seizures, headache, vision problems, weakness, numbness, or tingling.

Likmez may not be suitable for people with a history of blood dyscrasias and may cause mild transient leukopenia. It may also interfere with certain laboratory tests and interact with certain medications.

Metronidazole has been shown to be carcinogenic in rats and mice and unnecessary use should be avoided.

This medicine is not suitable for treating a viral infection such as a cold or flu.

Before you take this medicine

Do not take Likmez if you:

Before taking Likmez, tell your doctor about all your medical conditions, including if you:

The use of metronidazole during pregnancy has been well studied and a review of 17 studies found that treatment of bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis with metronidazole reduced the risk of preterm birth, was effective, and did not pose a teratogenic risk. Anecdotal studies suggest that its use may result in low birth weight or premature birth. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking metronidazole during pregnancy.

Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed. Likmez can pass into breast milk. Talk to your doctor about the best way to feed your baby while taking metronidazole. If you are breast-feeding, you may consider expressing and discarding your breast milk and giving breast milk or formula to your infant during treatment with Likmez and for 48 hours after the last dose.

How should I take Likmez?

Take it exactly as your doctor tells you.

For more serious anaerobic infections, intravenous metronidazole is usually administered first.

What are the side effects of Likmez?

Get medical help right away if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Likmez (hives, itching, warmth, or tingling; fever, joint pain; dry mouth, dry vagina; stuffy nose, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat) or a serious skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple rash with blistering and peeling).

Likmez can cause serious side effects, including:

Cardiac arrhythmias (QT prolongation) can also occur. Metronidazole can cause life-threatening liver problems in people with Cockayne syndrome. What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the medicine as soon as possible, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next dose. Do not take two doses at the same time.

What happens if I overdose?

If you have taken too much Likmez, call your doctor or the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, numbness, tingling, or problems with balance or muscle movement.

What should I avoid when using metronidazole?

Do not drink alcohol or consume foods, medications, or other products that contain alcohol or propylene glycol while you are taking Likmez and for 3 days after your last dose. There may be unpleasant effects such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and warmth or tingling under the skin.

What other medications affect Likmez?

Sometimes it is not safe to use certain medicines together. Some medications can affect the blood levels of other medications you are taking, which may increase side effects or make the medications less effective. Tell your doctor about all medications you are currently taking. Many medications can affect metronidazole, especially:

Consuming alcohol while taking Likmez is not recommended because the combination of metronidazole and alcohol can cause a reaction (often called a disulfiram-like reaction) in some people. Symptoms may include hot flashes, headaches, nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps. The product information and health experts recommend not drinking alcohol during metronidazole treatment and for 3 days after completing the course.
