What is Magnesium Citrate?

Magnesium citrate is also used as a laxative to treat occasional constipation.

Side effects of magnesium citrate

Magnesium citrate can cause serious side effects. Stop using magnesium citrate and call your doctor immediately if you have:

  • no bowel movements within 6 hours of taking the drug;

  • Pain during bowel movements, rectal bleeding;

  • watery diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, severe stomach pain;

  • painful or difficult urination;

  • flushing (warmth, redness, or tingling);

  • a light-headed feeling, as if you were going to faint;

  • weak or shallow breathing, slow heartbeat; or

  • Muscle weakness, increased thirst.

Common magnesium citrate side effects may include:

  • loose stools, diarrhea, stomach cramps;

  • abdominal pain;

  • Dizziness; or

  • increased sweating.

Before you take this medicine

Ask a doctor or pharmacist whether it is safe to use magnesium citrate if you have or have ever had:

  • a sudden change in bowel habits that lasts more than 2 weeks;

  • stomach pain, nausea, vomiting;

  • if you are on a diet low in magnesium or sodium; or

  • Kidney disease.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a doctor before using this medicine.

How should I take magnesium citrate?

Use exactly as directed on the label or as prescribed by your doctor.

Take with a full glass of water.

Shake the liquid medicine. Measure a dose using the measuring device provided (not a kitchen spoon).

Magnesium citrate should induce a bowel movement within 30 minutes to 6 hours of taking the medication.

Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 7 days of treatment or if the medicine does not show results.If you don't have a bowel movement after using a laxative, it may be a sign of a more serious condition than occasional constipation.

Store at cool room temperature, away from moisture and heat.

Magnesium citrate dosage information

Usual adult dosage for constipation:

240 ml once orally.

Usual pediatric dose for constipation:

6 to 12 years: 100 to 150 ml once orally.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If necessary, magnesium citrate is used. If you are on a dosing schedule, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next dose. Do not use two doses at the same time.

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222.

What should I avoid when taking magnesium citrate?

Avoid taking other medicines within 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking magnesium citrate. Laxatives can make it harder for your body to absorb other medicines you take by mouth.

What other drugs will affect magnesium citrate?

Other medications can affect magnesium citrate, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking.
