Before using methylaminolevulinate
When deciding whether to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the benefits it produces. This is a decision that you and your doctor will make. The following should be noted with this medicine:
Allergies
Tell your doctor if you have ever had an unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Also tell your doctor if you have other allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives or animals. For over-the-counter products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.
Pediatrics
No appropriate studies have been conducted on the relationship between age and the effects of methyl aminolevulinate in children and adolescents. Safety and effectiveness have not been established.
geriatrics
Studies conducted to date have not shown any geriatric-specific problems that would limit the benefit of methylaminolevulinate in the elderly.
Drug interactions
Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines can be used together, although interactions may occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose or other precautions may be necessary. Tell your doctor if you are taking other prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicine.
Interactions with food/tobacco/alcohol
Certain medicines should not be taken during or near food or consumption of certain foods because interactions may occur. Consuming alcohol or tobacco with certain medications can also lead to interactions. Discuss using your medicine with food, alcohol or tobacco with your doctor.
Other medical problems
The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of this medicine. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:
- Allergie gegen Mandelöl bzw
- Allergie gegen Erdnussöl oder
- Allergie gegen Porphyrine (z. B. Porfimer). [Photofrin®]Verteporfin [Visudyne®]) oder
- Lichtempfindlichkeit (empfindliche Haut gegenüber Sonnenlicht), Vorgeschichte – Sollte bei Patienten mit diesen Erkrankungen nicht angewendet werden.
- Blutungsprobleme bzw
- Hautkrebs oder andere Hautläsionen, Vorgeschichte – Mit Vorsicht verwenden. Kann dazu führen, dass sich die Nebenwirkungen verschlimmern.
Proper use of methyl aminolevulinate
Methyl aminolevulinate is applied to your skin in a clinic or doctor's office. You will receive two treatments of this medicine, one week apart.
Methylaminolevulinate is for skin use only. Do not let it get into your eyes, nose or mouth. If it gets into these areas, tell your doctor immediately.
Precautions when using methyl aminolevulinate
It is very important that your doctor checks your progress three months after treatment. This will help your doctor determine whether the medicine is working properly and check for any unwanted effects.
This medicine causes the treated areas of skin to become more sensitive to light. Avoid exposure to sunlight or bright indoor light for 3 hours after applying the medication to your skin. This includes medical examination lights, surgical lights, tanning beds or any lights that are in your area. You should also avoid exposure to sunlight or bright room light on the treated skin for 2 days after the light treatment (photodynamic therapy). Cover the treated skin areas. If you have to go out during the day, wear a protective hat or protective clothing. If you have any questions, contact your doctor.
Avoid cold temperatures for 3 hours after the medicine is applied to your skin. Wear warm clothing and cover the treated area when in cold places.
Side effects of methylaminolevulinate
In addition to the necessary effects, a medicine may also have some undesirable effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, medical attention may be required if they occur.

- rötlicher Fleck oder gereizter Bereich auf der Haut
- Sehen von Lichtblitzen oder Lichtfunken
- Sehen von schwebenden Flecken vor den Augen oder dem Erscheinen eines Schleiers oder Vorhangs über einem Teil der Sicht
- glänzende Beule auf der Haut
- Hautausschlag, verkrustet, schuppig und nässend
- weißer, gelber oder wachsartiger, narbenartiger Bereich auf der Haut
Some side effects may occur that usually do not require medical attention. These side effects may disappear during treatment as your body gets used to the medicine. Your doctor may also be able to give you ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.
