Before using sodium polystyrene sulfonate

When deciding whether to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the benefits it produces. This is a decision that you and your doctor will make. The following should be noted with this medicine:

Allergies

Tell your doctor if you have ever had an unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Also tell your doctor if you have other allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives or animals. For over-the-counter products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.

Pediatrics

No appropriate studies have been conducted on the relationship between age and the effects of sodium polystyrene sulfonate in children and adolescents. However, child-specific problems that would limit the use of this medicine in children are not expected.

This medicine should not be used in newborns who have reduced or slow bowel movements.

geriatrics

There is no information available on the relationship between age and the effects of sodium polystyrene sulfonate in geriatric patients.

Breastfeeding

Studies in women suggest that this medication poses minimal risk to the infant when used during breastfeeding.

Drug interactions

Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines can be used together, although interactions may occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose or other precautions may be necessary. If you are receiving this medicine, it is particularly important that your doctor knows whether you are taking any of the medicines listed below. The following interactions were selected for their potential significance and are not necessarily exhaustive.

Using this medicine with any of the following medicines is not usually recommended but may be necessary in some cases. If both medicines are prescribed together, your doctor may change the dose or how often you use one or both medicines.

  • Meloxicam
  • Sorbit

Using this medicine with any of the following medicines may result in an increased risk of certain side effects, but using both medicines may be the best treatment for you. If both medicines are prescribed together, your doctor may change the dose or how often you use one or both medicines.

  • Liothyronin

Interactions with food/tobacco/alcohol

Certain medicines should not be taken during or near food or consumption of certain foods because interactions may occur. Consuming alcohol or tobacco with certain medications can also lead to interactions. Discuss using your medicine with food, alcohol or tobacco with your doctor.

Other medical problems

The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of this medicine. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:

  • Darmverschluss bzw

  • Hypomagnesiämie (Mangel an Magnesium im Blut) – Mit Vorsicht anwenden. Kann diese Bedingungen verschlimmern.
  • Hyperkaliämie, lebensbedrohlich – sollte aufgrund des verzögerten Wirkungseintritts nicht als Notfallbehandlung eingesetzt werden.
  • Hypovolämie (geringes Blutvolumen) oder
  • Nierenerkrankung – Mit Vorsicht anwenden. Kann dazu führen, dass sich die Nebenwirkungen verschlimmern.
  • Patienten, die nach einer Operation keinen Stuhlgang haben
  • Magen- oder Darmprobleme (z. B. Blutungen, Kolitis, Verstopfung, Perforation), Vorgeschichte von – Vermeiden Sie die Anwendung bei Patienten mit diesen Erkrankungen.

Proper use of sodium polystyrene sulfonate

A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine in a hospital. Sodium polystyrene sulfonate is administered as a rectal enema.

Take this medicine at least 3 hours before or after taking oral medicines. If your stomach takes too long to empty food (gastroparesis), take this medicine 6 hours before or after taking oral medicines.

Precautions when using sodium polystyrene sulfonate

It is very important that your doctor checks you closely to make sure this medicine is working properly. Blood tests may be needed to check for adverse effects.

Hypokalemia (low levels of potassium in the blood) may occur while using this medication. Consult your doctor immediately if you have confusion, dry mouth, increased thirst, irregular heartbeat, irritability, muscle cramps, nausea or vomiting, or difficulty breathing.

This medicine can cause a serious stomach or intestinal problem called intestinal necrosis. This is more likely if you have a history of bowel disease, bowel surgery, low blood volume, or kidney problems, or if you take sorbitol with this medicine. Tell your doctor right away if you or your child have severe constipation, severe stomach pain, bloody, black, or tarry stools, or vomit blood or something that looks like coffee grounds.

Tell your doctor if you experience unexplained weight gain or edema (fluid retention or body swelling) while using this medication.

This medicine may cause lung or breathing problems (e.g., bronchitis, bronchopneumonia) if you inhale its powder form. It may also increase your risk of aspiration. To prevent this, take this medicine in an upright position. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions.

If you are taking antacids or laxatives containing aluminum or magnesium, tell your doctor before using sodium polystyrene sulfonate. These medicines can prevent sodium polystyrene sulfonate from working properly and cause serious side effects.

Do not take any other medicines unless you have discussed this with your doctor. This includes both prescription and nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medications and herbal or vitamin supplements.

Side effects of sodium polystyrene sulfonate

In addition to the necessary effects, a medicine may also have some undesirable effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, medical attention may be required if they occur.

Contact your doctor or nurse immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

Get emergency help immediately if any of the following symptoms of overdose occur:

  • Ohnmacht
  • schneller, langsamer oder unregelmäßiger Herzschlag
  • Benommenheit
  • Muskelkrämpfe (Tetanie) oder Zuckungen
  • pochender oder schneller Puls
  • Zittern
