What is Su-Tuss HD Elixir?
Su-Tuss HD Elixir does not treat mucous cough or cough caused by smoking, emphysema, or chronic bronchitis.
Su-Tuss HD Elixir contains a narcotic cough suppressant and may be habit forming.
Su-Tuss HD Elixir may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Side effects of Su-Tuss HD Elixir
If necessary, get emergency medical helpSigns of an allergic reaction:hives; difficult breathing; Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
This medicine may slow or stop your breathing, which may result in death. A person caring for you should seek emergency medical attention if your breathing is slow and takes long pauses, your lips are blue, or you have difficulty waking up.
This medicine can cause serious side effects. Stop using this medicine and call your doctor immediately if you have:

loud breathing, sighing, shallow breathing;
-
confusion, severe weakness or sleepiness;
-
trembling, severe restlessness;
-
a seizure;
-
irregular heartbeat;
-
severe headache, blurred vision, throbbing in the neck or ears;
-
a light-headed feeling, as if you were going to faint;
-
severe constipation, stomach pain; or
-
Adrenal problems – nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dizziness, increasing tiredness or weakness.
Serious side effects may be more likely in older adults and in people who are overweight, malnourished or debilitated.
Common side effects of Su-Tuss HD Elixir may include:

dizziness, drowsiness;

Headache;
-
sleep problems (insomnia);
-
nausea; or
-
low blood pressure.

Warnings
Abusing opioids can lead to addiction, overdose or death.Store the medication in a place where others cannot reach it.
If you use Su-Tuss HD Elixir with alcohol or other medicines that cause drowsiness or slow your breathing, fatal side effects may occur.
Before you take this medicine
Do not use this medicine if you have taken an MAO inhibitor in the last 14 days. Dangerous drug interactions could occur. MAOIs include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others.
You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to guaifenesin, hydrocodone, or pseudoephedrine, or if you have:

angle-closure glaucoma;
-
severe or uncontrolled high blood pressure;
-
coronary heart disease (clogged arteries); or
-
if you are unable to urinate.
This medicine isnot confirmedfor use by persons under 18 years of age.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had:
-
asthma or other breathing problems;
-
a head injury or increased pressure in your skull;
-
Diabetes;
-
thyroid disease;
-
Addison's disease (an adrenal disease);
-
liver or kidney disease;
-
an enlarged prostate or problems urinating; or
-
Stomach problems.
If you take hydrocodone during pregnancy, your baby could become dependent on the drug.This can lead to life-threatening withdrawal symptoms in the baby after birth. Babies born addicted to habit-forming medications may require medical treatment for several weeks.
Don't breastfeed.Hydrocodone can pass into breast milk and cause drowsiness, breathing problems, or death in a breast-fed baby.
How should I take Su-Tuss HD Elixir?
Follow the instructions on your prescription label and read all medication guides. Never use Su-Tuss HD Elixir in larger quantities or for longer than directed. Only take this medicine until your symptoms go away.
Never share opioid medications with another person, especially someone with a history of drug abuse or addiction. Abuse can lead to addiction, overdose or death.Store the medication in a place where others cannot reach it. Selling or giving away opioid medications is against the law.
Measure liquid medicine carefully. Use the dosing syringe provided or a medication dosing device (not a kitchen spoon).
Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 7 days of treatment or if you have a fever with headache, cough, or rash.
If you need surgery or a medical exam, tell the surgeon or doctor in advance whether you have taken any cough or cold medicine in the past few days.
Store at room temperature, protected from moisture, heat and light. Keep track of your medications. You should be aware if someone uses it improperly or without a prescription.
Do not keep any leftover medication.Even a single dose can cause death if this medication is used accidentally or improperly.Carefully read and follow the instructions included with this medicine for the safe disposal of unused parts.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Because this medicine is used as needed, you may not be required to follow a dosing schedule. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next dose. Do not use two doses at the same time.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222.A hydrocodone overdose can be fatal.
Symptoms of overdose may include extreme drowsiness, feeling weak or weak, cold and clammy skin, trouble breathing, fast or slow heartbeat, confusion, hallucinations, slurred speech, blue lips, slow breathing, fainting, or stopping breathing.
What should I avoid when taking Su-Tuss HD Elixir?
Don't drink alcohol.Dangerous side effects or death could occur.
Avoid driving or operating machines until you know how Su-Tuss HD Elixir affects you. Dizziness or severe sleepiness can lead to falls or other accidents.
Consult a doctor or pharmacist before taking other cough or cold medicines that may contain similar ingredients.
What other drugs will affect Su-Tuss HD Elixir?
Using this medicine with other medicines that slow your breathing may cause dangerous side effects or death.Consult your doctor before taking opioid medications, sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, or anti-anxiety or seizure medications.
Opioid medications can interact with many other medications, causing dangerous side effects or death.Make sure your doctor knows if you are also using:
-
cold or allergy medicine, bronchodilator asthma/COPD medicine, or a diuretic (“water pill”);
-
medications for motion sickness, irritable bowel syndrome, or overactive bladder;
-
other narcotic medications – opioid pain relievers or prescription cough medicines;
-
a sedative such as Valium – Diazepam, Alprazolam, Lorazepam, Xanax, Klonopin, Versed and others; or
-
Medications that make you sleepy or slow your breathing – sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, medicines used to treat mood disorders or mental illnesses.
