Sumatriptan (nasal)
Sumatriptan (nasal)
Uses for sumatriptan
Many people find that their headaches disappear completely after using sumatriptan. Other people find that their headaches are much less painful and that they can go about their normal activities even if the headache has not completely gone away. Sumatriptan often relieves other symptoms that occur with migraine headaches, such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.
Sumatriptan is not an ordinary painkiller. It does not relieve pain other than migraine headaches. This medicine is usually used in people whose headaches are not relieved by acetaminophen, aspirin, or other painkillers.
Sumatriptan has caused serious side effects in some people, especially those with heart or blood vessel disease. Be sure to discuss the risks and benefits of using this medication with your doctor.
This medicine is only available with a doctor's prescription.
Before using sumatriptan
When deciding whether to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the benefits it produces. This is a decision that you and your doctor will make. The following should be noted with this medicine:
Allergies
Tell your doctor if you have ever had an unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Also tell your doctor if you have other allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives or animals. For over-the-counter products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.
Pediatrics
No appropriate studies have been conducted on the relationship between age and the effects of sumatriptan nasal powder and spray in children and adolescents. The use of Tosymra™ is not recommended in children. Safety and effectiveness have not been established.
geriatrics
Studies conducted to date have not shown any geriatric-specific problems that would limit the benefit of Tosymra™ in older people. However, older patients are at higher risk of age-related liver, kidney, or heart problems, which may require caution and dose adjustment in patients receiving this drug.
The use of Imitrex® and Onzetra™ is not recommended in elderly patients with kidney problems, heart or blood vessel disease, or high blood pressure and should not be used in elderly patients with liver problems.
Breastfeeding
There are insufficient studies in women to determine the risk to infants when using this drug while breast-feeding. Weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks before taking this medication while breastfeeding.
Drug interactions
Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines can be used together, although interactions may occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose or other precautions may be necessary. If you are taking this medicine, it is particularly important that your doctor knows whether you are taking any of the medicines listed below. Correct use of sumatriptan
Use this medicine only as directed by your doctor. Do not use more of it, do not use it more often or for longer than prescribed by your doctor. Taking too much sumatriptan may increase your risk of side effects.
This medicine is for nasal use only. Do not let any of it get into your eyes or on your skin. If it does get on these areas, rinse it off immediately.
Do not use this medicine for headaches that are different from your usual migraine attacks. Instead, ask your doctor.
To relieve your migraine as quickly as possible, use this medicine as soon as the headache begins. Even if you experience warning signs of an impending migraine (aura), you should wait until the headache starts before using sumatriptan.
Ask your doctor in advance about other medicines you may be taking if sumatriptan does not work. Consult your doctor immediately after taking the other medicine. Headaches that are not relieved by sumatriptan are sometimes caused by medical conditions that require other treatments.
If you feel significantly better after a dose of sumatriptan, but your headache comes back or gets worse after a while, you can take another dose of sumatriptan at least 1 hour (Tosymra™) or 2 hours (Imitrex® or Onzetra™) after the first dose. Do not use more than 3 doses in 24 hours.
This medicine comes with a package leaflet and instructions for the patient. Read and follow the instructions carefully. Ask your doctor if you have any questions.
How to use the nasal powder:
How to use the nasal spray:

Precautions when using sumatriptan
It is very important that your doctor check your progress at regular visits. This will help your doctor determine whether the medicine is working properly and decide whether you should continue using it. Blood and urine tests may be needed to check for adverse effects.
Do not use this medicine if you have taken other medicines for triptans or ergot migraines within the last 24 hours. Some examples of triptan medicines are almotriptan (Axert®), eletriptan (Relpax®), frovatriptan (Frova®), naratriptan (Amerge®), rizatriptan (Maxalt®), sumatriptan/naproxen (Treximet®), or zolmitriptan (Zomig®). ). Some examples of ergot-type drugs are dihydroergotamine (DHE 45®, Migranal®), ergotamine (Bellergal®, Cafergot®, Ergomar®, Wigraine®) or methysergide (Sansert®). Also do not use this medicine if you have taken an MAO-A inhibitor (e.g. Nardil®, Parnate®) in the last 14 days.
This medicine can cause a serious allergic reaction called anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention. The most serious signs of this reaction are very rapid or irregular breathing, shortness of breath, or fainting. Other signs may include: changes in facial skin color, very fast but irregular heartbeat or pulse, hive-like swellings on the skin, and swelling or puffiness of the eyelids or around the eyes. If these side effects occur, get emergency help immediately.
If you have taken this medicine and your migraines have worsened or become more frequent, consult your doctor.
This medicine may cause problems if you have heart disease. If your doctor thinks you may have a problem with this medication, he or she may want you to take your first dose in the doctor's office or clinic.
This medicine may increase your risk of irregular heartbeat, heart attack, angina, or stroke. This is more likely if you or a family member already has heart disease, if you have diabetes or high blood pressure, or if you smoke. Call your doctor immediately if you have symptoms of a heart problem, such as: B. Chest pain or discomfort, irregular heartbeat, nausea or vomiting, pain or discomfort in the shoulders, arms, jaw, back or neck, shortness of breath, or sweating. Make sure your doctor knows about any other medicines you are taking. Taking sumatriptan with some medicines can cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome. These include in particular medicines for the treatment of depression such as citalopram, duloxetine, escitalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, olanzapine, paroxetine, sertraline, venlafaxine, Celexa®, Cymbalta®, Effexor®, Lexapro®, Luvox®, Paxil®, Prozac®, Sarafem®, Symbyax® or Zoloft®. Consuming alcoholic beverages may make headaches worse or cause new headaches to occur. People who suffer from severe headaches should avoid alcoholic beverages, especially during the headache.
Some people feel dizzy or sleepy during or after a migraine, or after using sumatriptan to relieve a migraine. Do not drive or do other dangerous activities until you know how this medicine affects you.
