Sumatriptan (oral)

Uses for sumatriptan

Many people find that their headaches disappear completely after taking sumatriptan. Other people find that their headaches are much less painful and that they can go about their normal activities even if the headache has not completely gone away. Sumatriptan often relieves other symptoms that occur with migraine headaches, such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.

Sumatriptan is not an ordinary painkiller. It does not relieve pain other than migraine headaches. This medicine is usually used in people whose headaches are not relieved by acetaminophen, aspirin, or other painkillers.

Sumatriptan has caused serious side effects in some people, especially those with heart or blood vessel disease. Be sure to discuss with your doctor the risks of using this medication as well as the possible benefits.

This medicine is only available with a doctor's prescription.

Before using sumatriptan

When deciding whether to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the benefits it produces. This is a decision that you and your doctor will make. The following should be noted with this medicine:

Allergies

Tell your doctor if you have ever had an unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Also tell your doctor if you have other allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives or animals. For over-the-counter products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.

Pediatrics

No appropriate studies have been conducted on the relationship between age and the effects of sumatriptan in children and adolescents. Safety and effectiveness have not been established.

geriatrics

The use of sumatriptan is not recommended in elderly patients with kidney problems, heart or blood vessel disease, or high blood pressure, and should not be used in elderly patients with liver problems.

Breastfeeding

There are insufficient studies in women to determine the risk to infants when using this drug while breast-feeding. Weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks before taking this medication while breastfeeding.

Drug interactions

Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines can be used together, although interactions may occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose or other precautions may be necessary. Correct use of sumatriptan

Do not use this medicine for headaches that are different from your usual migraine attacks. Talk to your doctor about what you can do if you have regular headaches.

To relieve your migraine as quickly as possible, use this medicine as soon as the headache begins. Even if you experience warning signs of an impending migraine (aura), you should wait until the headache starts before using sumatriptan.

Ask your doctor in advance about other medicines you may be taking if sumatriptan does not work. After using the other medicine, contact your doctor as soon as possible. Headaches that are not relieved by sumatriptan are sometimes caused by medical conditions that require other treatment.

If you feel significantly better after a dose of sumatriptan, but your headache comes back or gets worse after a while, wait at least 2 hours before taking another dose. However, only use this medicine as directed by your doctor. Do not use more or more often than directed. Taking too much sumatriptan may increase your risk of side effects. Do not take more than 200 mg in 24 hours.

Swallow the tablet whole with water or other liquid. Do not crush, break or chew it.

You can take the tablet with or without food.

This medicine comes with a package leaflet. Read and follow the instructions carefully. Ask your doctor if you have any questions.

dosage

The dose of this medicine is different for different patients. Follow your doctor's instructions or the label directions. The following information includes average doses of this medicine only. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to.

The amount of medicine you take depends on the strength of the medicine. In addition, the number of doses you take each day, the time between doses, and how long you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.

storage

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Protect from freezing.

Keep away from children.

Do not keep medications that are outdated or no longer needed.

Ask your doctor how to throw away medicines you don't use.

Precautions when using sumatriptan

It is very important that your doctor check your progress at regular visits. This will help your doctor determine whether the medicine is working properly and decide whether you should continue using it.

Ask your doctor if you have used this medicine and it does not work. Also ask your doctor if your migraine headaches have gotten worse or if they have occurred more frequently since you started using this medication.

You should not use this medicine if you have taken an MAO inhibitor (MAOI) such as phenelzine (Nardil®) or tranylcypromine (Parnate®) within the last 2 weeks. Do not use this medicine if you have taken other triptan migraine medicines or ergot-type medicines within the last 24 hours. Some examples of triptan medicines are almotriptan (Axert®), eletriptan (Relpax®), naratriptan (Amerge®), or zolmitriptan (Zomig®). Some examples of ergot-type drugs are dihydroergotamine (DHE 45®, Migranal®), ergotamine (Bellergal®, Cafergot®, Ergomar®, Wigraine®) or methysergide (Sansert®).

This medicine may cause problems if you have heart disease. If your doctor thinks you may have a problem with this medication, he or she may want you to take your first dose in the doctor's office or clinic.

This medicine may increase your risk of irregular heartbeat, heart attack, angina, or stroke. This is more likely if you or a family member already has heart disease, if you have diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, or if you smoke. Call your doctor immediately if you have symptoms of a heart problem, such as: B. Chest pain or discomfort, irregular heartbeat, nausea or vomiting, pain or discomfort in the shoulders, arms, jaw, back or neck, shortness of breath, or sweating. Call your doctor immediately if you notice symptoms of a stroke, such as: B. Confusion, difficulty speaking, double vision, headache, inability to move arms, legs, or facial muscles, inability to speak, or slow speech.

Consult your doctor immediately if you experience chest, jaw, or neck discomfort after using this medication. Also tell your doctor if you experience sudden or severe abdominal or stomach pain or bloody diarrhea after using this medication.

Contact your doctor immediately if blurred vision, difficulty reading, or other vision problems occur during or after treatment. You may need to have your eyes examined by an ophthalmologist (ophthalmologist).

Using sumatriptan alone or in combination with other migraine medications for 10 or more days per month may cause headaches to worsen. You can keep a headache diary to record the frequency of your headaches and drug use.

Make sure your doctor knows about any other medicines you are taking. Taking sumatriptan with some medicines can cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome. These include in particular medicines for the treatment of depression such as citalopram, duloxetine, escitalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline, venlafaxine, Celexa®, Cymbalta®, Effexor®, Lexapro®, Luvox®, Paxil®, Prozac®, Sarafem®, Symbyax® or Zoloft®. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience agitation, confusion, diarrhea, unusual excitement when speaking, fever, overactive reflexes, poor coordination, restlessness, trembling, sweating, shaking or shaking that you cannot control, or twitching. These could be symptoms of serotonin syndrome.

This medicine can cause a serious allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis requires immediate medical attention. The most serious signs of this reaction are very rapid or irregular breathing, shortness of breath, wheezing, or fainting. Other signs may include changes in facial skin, very fast but irregular heartbeat or pulse, hive-like swellings on the skin, and swelling or puffiness of the eyelids or around the eyes. If these effects occur, get emergency help immediately.

Consuming alcoholic beverages may make headaches worse or cause new headaches to occur. People who suffer from severe headaches should avoid alcoholic beverages, especially during the headache.

Some people feel dizzy or sleepy during or after a migraine, or after using sumatriptan to relieve a migraine. If you feel dizzy or sleepy, do not drive, operate machinery, or do other activities that could be dangerous if you are dizzy or inattentive.
