What is Talicia?

Talicia is a combination medicine used to treat Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in adults.

Talicia may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Talicia side effects

If necessary, get emergency medical helpSigns of an allergic reaction(hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat)or a severe skin reaction(Fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple rash with blistering and peeling).

Talicia can cause serious side effects. Call your doctor immediately if you have:

  • severe stomach pain, watery or bloody diarrhea (even if this occurs months after your last dose);

  • a light-headed feeling, as if you were going to faint;

  • easy bruising, unusual bleeding, purple or red spots under the skin;

  • Eye pain or redness, blurred vision, spotting, your eyes may be more sensitive to light;

  • flu-like symptoms – fever, chills, sweating, fatigue, body aches, vomiting, chest pain, cough, shortness of breath;

  • Kidney problems – urinating more or less than usual, fever, nausea, vomiting, blood in the urine, confusion, swelling, rapid weight gain; or

  • Lupus-like symptoms – muscle or joint pain, flu symptoms, chest pain, and a rash or blotchy skin that worsens in sunlight.

Common side effects of Talicia may include:

  • red, orange or brown discoloration of your skin, tears, sweat, saliva, urine or stool;

  • indigestion, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;

  • Headache;

  • discolored urine;

  • sore throat;

  • rash; or

  • vaginal itching or discharge.

Warnings

Tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic.

Tell your doctor about all medications you are currently taking and any medications you are taking or stopping. Many medicines can interact, and some medicines should not be used together.

Before you take this medicine

You should not use Talicia if you are allergic to amoxicillin (Amoxil, Augmentin), omeprazole (Prilosec), or rifabutin (Mycobutin).

Many medications can interact and have dangerous effects. Some medicines should not be used with Talicia. Your doctor may change your treatment plan if you also use:

  • delavirdine;

  • rilpivirine (Juluca); or

  • Voriconazole.

Tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • an allergic reaction to an antibiotic;

  • lupus;

  • liver disease;

  • kidney disease; or

  • Mononucleosis.

Talicia can harm an unborn child.Use effective contraception to prevent pregnancy and tell your doctor if you become pregnant.

This medicine may make hormonal contraceptives, including birth control pills, injections, implants, skin patches, and vaginal rings, less effective. To prevent pregnancy while using Talicia, use a barrier form of contraception: condom, diaphragm, cervical cap, or contraceptive sponge.

This medicine may affect fertility (ability to have children).in men.

Breastfeeding may not be safe while using this medication. Ask your doctor about any risks.

Talicia is not approved for use by anyone under 18 years of age.

How should I take Talicia?

Follow all instructions on your prescription label and read any medication guides or instructions for use. Use the medicine exactly as directed.

Take with food and a full glass (8 ounces) of water.

Swallow the capsule whole and do not crush, chew, break, or open it.

Up to 14 days after you last took Talicia, this medicine may affect the results of certain medical tests, including a drug test urine test. You may get incorrect results. Tell laboratory personnel that you are using this medicine. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using this medicine.

Use this medicine for the full time prescribed, even if your symptoms improve quickly. Skipping doses may increase the risk of a drug-resistant infection. Talicia does not treat viral infections such as flu or colds.

Store this medicine in the original container at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the medicine as soon as possible, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next dose. Do not take two doses at the same time.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222.

Symptoms of overdose include drowsiness, confusion, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, sweating, or fast heartbeat.

What should I avoid while taking Talicia?

Do not take Talicia with alcohol.

Antibiotic medications can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have watery or bloody diarrhea, call your doctor before using any diarrhea medication.

Avoid wearing soft contact lenses. The rifabutin contained in this medicine may discolor your tears and permanently stain contact lenses.

What other medications affect Talicia?

Sometimes it is not safe to take certain medications at the same time. Some medications can affect the blood levels of other medications you are taking, which may increase side effects or make the medications less effective.

Tell your doctor about all medications you are currently taking. Many medications can affect Talicia, particularly:

  • allopurinol;

  • clopidogrel;

  • digoxin;

  • methotrexate;

  • St. John's wort;

  • tacrolimus;

  • an antibiotic – clarithromycin, rifampin, telithromycin;

  • Antifungals – fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, posaconazole, voriconazole;

  • antiviral medicines used to treat HIV/AIDS – fosamprenavir, indinavir, lopinavir, nelfinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir, tipranavir; or

  • a blood thinner – warfarin, Coumadin, Jantoven.

This list is not complete and many other medications can affect Talicia. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins and herbal products. Not all possible drug interactions are listed here.
