What is Targretin topical?

Topical side effects of Targretin

If necessary, get emergency medical helpSigns of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using Targretin and call your doctor immediately if you experience severe skin irritation (rash, itching, burning, redness, flaking) after using the medication.

Common side effects of Targretin may include:

  • mild rash, itching or skin irritation; or

  • Skin dryness or peeling.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You can report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Warnings

Targretin can harm an unborn baby or cause birth defects if the mother or father uses Targretin.Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant.

Both men and women using Targretin should use effective contraception to prevent pregnancy starting one month before starting and continuing for at least one month after stopping treatment.

Stop using this medicine and tell your doctor immediately if you stop using contraception, if you miss your period, or if pregnancy occurs while either the mother or father is using Targretin.

Before you take this medicine

You should not use Targretin if you are allergic to it or are pregnant.

Tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • liver disease; or

  • Kidney disease.

Targretin may harm an unborn baby or cause birth defects if the mother or father uses this medicine.

If you are a man,Use condoms during sex if your partner is pregnant or may become pregnant. Continue to use condoms while using Targretin and for at least 1 month after the last dose.

If you are a womanDo not take Targretin if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. A negative pregnancy test must be obtained seven days before starting to use this medicine and once a month during treatment.

  • You should start using Targretin on the 2nd or 3rd day of a normal menstrual period.

  • Use two effective forms of birth control, starting 1 month before you start using Targretin and continuing until at least 1 month after your last dose.

  • At least one of your forms of birth control should be non-hormonal, such as: B. a condom, a cervical cap, a contraceptive sponge, an IUD or a diaphragm with spermicide.

  • Stop using Targretin and tell your doctor immediately if you stop using contraception or if you miss your period.

If pregnancy occurs while either the mother or father is using Targretin, stop using the drug and tell your doctor immediately.

You should not breast-feed while using Targretin.

How should I use Targretin topical?

Follow all instructions on your prescription label and read any medication guides or instructions for use. Use the medicine exactly as directed.

Targretin is usually used once every other day for the first week and is gradually increased until you are using the medicine four times a day. Follow your doctor's dosage instructions very carefully.

Carefully read and follow all instructions for use that come with your medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you do not understand these instructions.

Wash your hands before and after using Targretin unless you are using the medication to treat the skin on your hands.

Apply only enough gel to cover each lesion. Do not cover the treated skin with a bandage.

Avoid getting Targretin in your eyes, mouth, or nose, or on healthy skin. If this does happen, rinse or wash off the medicine.

If severe skin irritation occurs, you may need to stop using Targretin for a short time.

Store at room temperature, protected from moisture, heat and light.

It may take several weeks or months to get the full benefit from this medicine. Your doctor will determine how long your treatment should last.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Use the medicine as soon as possible, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next dose. Do not apply two doses at the same time.

What happens if I overdose?

An overdose of Targretin topical is not expected to be dangerous. Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222 if someone accidentally swallows the medication.

What should I avoid when using bexarotene topically?

Grapefruit can interact with Targretin and cause unwanted side effects. Avoid using grapefruit products.

Avoid taking a vitamin A supplement without your doctor's advice. Use only the amount recommended by your doctor.

Targretin could cause easier sunburn. Avoid sunlight or tanning beds. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) when outdoors.

Avoid using other medications on the areas you are treating with Targretin unless your doctor tells you to.

Do not use insect repellents or other products that contain DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) while using Targretin. This medicine may increase DEET toxicity, which can be dangerous.

What other medications will affect Targretin topical use?

Tell your doctor about all medications you are currently taking. Many medications can affect Targretin, particularly:

  • gemfibrozil;

  • an antibiotic or antifungal;

  • antiviral medicine; or

  • Seizure medication.

This list is not complete and many other medications can affect Targretin. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins and herbal products. Not all possible drug interactions are listed here.
