Technetium Tc 99m Sulfur Colloid is used to help your doctor see a picture of your esophagus, stomach, and lungs to see how well they are working. This medicine is used to diagnose gastroesophageal reflux disease and pulmonary aspiration.

This medicine should only be administered by or under the direct supervision of a doctor trained in nuclear medicine.

Before using Technetium TC 99m sulfur colloid

When deciding to use a diagnostic test, any risks of the test must be weighed against the benefits it provides. This is a decision that you and your doctor will make. Other things can also influence the test results. For this test the following should be taken into account:

Allergies

Tell your doctor if you have ever had an unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Also tell your doctor if you have other allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives or animals. For over-the-counter products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.

Pediatrics

Related studies conducted to date have not shown any pediatric problems that would limit the usefulness of the sulfur colloid Technetium Tc 99m in children.

geriatrics

Although no appropriate studies have been conducted on the relationship between age and the effects of Technetium Tc 99m sulfur colloid in the geriatric population, no geriatric-specific problems have been documented to date.

Breastfeeding

Studies suggest that this medication may alter milk production or composition. If no alternative to this medication is prescribed, monitor the infant for side effects and adequate milk intake.

Drug interactions

Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines can be used together, although interactions may occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose or other precautions may be necessary. Tell your doctor if you are taking other prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicine.

Interactions with food/tobacco/alcohol

Certain medicines should not be taken during or near food or consumption of certain foods because interactions may occur. Consuming alcohol or tobacco with certain medications can also lead to interactions. Discuss using your medicine with food, alcohol or tobacco with your doctor.

Other medical problems

The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of this diagnostic test. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:

Proper Use of Technetium TC 99m Sulfur Colloid

A doctor or other trained health professional will give this medicine to you or your child in a hospital or clinic. This medicine is given orally or through a stomach tube.

If this medicine is given orally to children, it should be combined with formula. When this medicine is given to children through a feeding tube, it is given into the stomach and then fed with dextrose or milk.

Precautions when using Technetium TC 99m Sulfur Colloid

It is very important that your doctor closely examines you or your child while you are receiving this medicine. This will help your doctor determine whether the medicine is working properly and decide whether you should continue using it.

This medicine can cause a serious allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis requires immediate medical attention. The most serious signs of this reaction are very rapid or irregular breathing, shortness of breath, wheezing, or fainting. Other signs may include changes in facial skin, very fast but irregular heartbeat or pulse, hive-like swellings on the skin, and swelling or puffiness of the eyelids or around the eyes. If these side effects occur, get emergency help immediately.

If you are given this medicine, you may be exposed to radiation. This may also increase your risk of cancer (especially in children). Talk to your doctor if you or your child have any concerns about this.

If you are a woman who can become pregnant, imaging tests should be done within 10 days of the start of your period or a pregnancy test should be done within 48 hours before the procedure.

Technetium Tc 99m Sulfur Colloid Side Effects

In addition to the necessary effects, a medicine may also have some undesirable effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, medical attention may be required if they occur.

Contact your doctor or nurse immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

Some side effects may occur that usually do not require medical attention. These side effects may disappear during treatment as your body gets used to the medicine. Your doctor may also be able to give you ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. If any of the following side effects persist or are bothersome, or if you have any questions, contact your doctor:
