What is Tequin?
Tequin is used to treat bacterial infections of the lungs, sinuses, skin, and urinary tract. It is also used to treat certain sexually transmitted diseases.
Tequin can also be used for purposes other than those listed here.
Warnings
You should not take Tequin if you have diabetes.
Before taking Tequin, tell your doctor if you have a personal or family history of “long QT syndrome” or any other heart rhythm disorder, especially if you are being treated with any of these medicines: quinidine (Cardioquin, Quinidex, Quinaglute), disopyramide (Norpace), bretylium (Bretylol), Procainamide (Pronestyl, Procan SR), amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone) or sotalol (Betapace).
If you are taking any of the following medicines, take them at least 4 hours after taking Tequin: an antacid that contains magnesium or aluminum; vitamin or mineral supplements that contain zinc, magnesium or iron; or didanosine chewable/buffered tablets or pediatric powder for oral solution (ddI, Videx, Videx Pediatric).
There are many other medications that can affect Tequin.Tell your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter medications you take.These include vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and medications prescribed by other doctors. Do not start taking a new medication without telling your doctor.
Take this medication for as many days as prescribed, even if you feel better. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is fully treated. Tequin does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.
Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV radiation (sunlamps or solarium). Tequin can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and cause sunburn. Use sunscreen (at least SPF 15) and wear protective clothing if you must be in the sun. Call your doctor if you have severe sunburn, redness, itching, rash, or swelling after sun exposure.
What should I discuss with my doctor before taking Tequin?
You should not take Tequin if you have diabetes.
Before taking Tequin, tell your doctor if you have a heart rhythm disorder, especially if you are being treated with any of these medications: quinidine (Cardioquin, Quinidex, Quinaglute), disopyramide (Norpace), bretylium (Bretylol), procainamide (Pronestyl, Procan SR), amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone) or sotalol (Betapace).
Before taking Tequin, tell your doctor if you have:
- eine persönliche oder familiäre Vorgeschichte des „Long-QT-Syndroms“;
- ein niedriger Kaliumspiegel in Ihrem Blut (Hypokaliämie);
- Herzerkrankung oder Herzrhythmusstörung;
- Nierenerkrankung;
- Leber erkrankung; oder
- Epilepsie oder eine andere Anfallserkrankung.
If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use Tequin or may require dosage adjustment or special testing during treatment.
FDA pregnancy category C. This medication may be harmful to the unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
It is not known whether Tequin passes into breast milk or whether it could harm a breastfed baby. If you are breast-feeding a baby, do not take Tequin without consulting your doctor.
Tequin should not be given to children under 18 years of age.
If you are over 60, you may be at higher risk of side effects from Tequin. Your doctor may prescribe a lower dose of this medicine.
How should I take Tequin?
Take Tequin exactly as prescribed. Do not take it in larger doses or for longer than recommended by your doctor.
Take each dose with a full glass (8 ounces) of water. Drink plenty of fluids while taking Tequin.
Take each dose at the same time each day. You can take Tequin with or without meals.
Take this medication for as many days as prescribed, even if you feel better. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is fully treated. Tequin does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.
Store this medication at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next scheduled time.NotTake additional medication to make up for the missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have taken too much of this medicine.
Symptoms of a Tequin overdose may include decreased activity, slowed breathing, vomiting, tremors, or seizures.
What should I avoid?
Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV radiation (sunlamps or solarium). Tequin can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and cause sunburn. Use sunscreen (at least SPF 15) and wear protective clothing if you must be in the sun. Call your doctor if you have severe sunburn, redness, itching, rash, or swelling after sun exposure.
Antibiotic medications can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have watery or bloody diarrhea, call your doctor. Do not use medication to stop diarrhea unless directed by your doctor.
Tequin may cause side effects that may affect your thinking or reactions. Be careful when driving or doing anything that requires you to be awake and alert.
What are the possible side effects of Tequin?
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these problemsSigns of an allergic reaction:hives; difficulty breathing; Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Stop using Tequin and call your doctor immediately if you experience any of these serious side effects:
- schneller, pochender oder ungleichmäßiger Herzschlag;
- Benommenheit, Ohnmacht;
- Anfall (Krämpfe);
- Taubheitsgefühl, Kribbeln, brennender Schmerz;
- Hautausschlag, der rot ist und Blasen oder Schalen bildet;
- Durchfall, der wässrig oder blutig ist;
- Übelkeit, Magenschmerzen, niedriges Fieber, Appetitlosigkeit, dunkler Urin, lehmfarbener Stuhl, Gelbsucht (Gelbfärbung der Haut oder der Augen);
- plötzliche Schmerzen oder Schwellungen in der Nähe Ihrer Gelenke (insbesondere im Arm oder Knöchel); oder
- ein Hautausschlag.
Continue using Tequin and talk to your doctor if you experience any of these less serious side effects:
- leichte Übelkeit, Erbrechen, Magenschmerzen, Durchfall;
- Schwindelgefühl, Unruhe oder Verwirrung;
- vaginaler Ausfluss oder Juckreiz;
- Schlafprobleme (Schlaflosigkeit oder Albträume); oder
- Kopfschmerzen.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or is particularly bothersome.
What other drugs will affect Tequin?
Certain medicines or minerals may make Tequin less effective if taken at the same time. If you are taking any of the following medicines, take them at least 4 hours after taking Tequin:
- ein Antazidum, das Magnesium oder Aluminium enthält (wie Amphojel, Maalox, Mylanta, Rolaids oder Rulox);
- Vitamin- oder Mineralstoffzusätze, die Zink, Magnesium oder Eisen enthalten; oder

Other medicines may cause side effects if used during treatment with Tequin. Before taking Tequin, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- Cisaprid (Propulsid);
- Erythromycin (E-Mycin, Ery-Tab, EES, andere);
- Warfarin (Coumadin);
- Probenecid (Benemid und andere);
- Digoxin (Lanoxin und andere);
- ein nichtsteroidales entzündungshemmendes Medikament (NSAID) wie Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, Nuprin, andere), Naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn, Anaprox), Ketoprofen (Orudis KT, Orudis, Oruvail) und andere;
- Herzrhythmusmedikamente wie Chinidin (Cardioquin, Quinidex, Quinaglute), Disopyramid (Norpace), Bretylium (Bretylol), Procainamid (Pronestyl, Procan SR), Amiodaron (Cordarone, Pacerone) oder Sotalol (Betapace);
- ein trizyklisches Antidepressivum wie Amitriptylin (Elavil, Endep), Amoxapin (Asendin), Imipramin (Tofranil), Nortriptylin (Pamelor), Doxepin (Sinequan) und andere; oder
- ein Phenothiazin, einschließlich Chlorpromazin (Thorazin), Fluphenazin (Prolixin), Perphenazin (Trilafon), Mesoridazin (Serentil), Thioridazin (Mellaril) und andere.
If you are taking any of these medicines, you may not be able to take Tequin or may need dose adjustments or special tests during treatment.
There may be other medications not listed that can affect Tequin. Tell your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter medications you take. These include vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and medications prescribed by other doctors. Do not start taking a new medication without telling your doctor.
