Trulance

What is Trulance?

Trulance activates certain substances in your intestines that help increase fluid secretion and muscle movement.

Trulance also causes changes in the consistency of your stool.

Warnings

You should not use Trulance if you are allergic to plecanatide or if your intestines are blocked.

Adults who cannot swallow Trulance tablets whole can crush the tablet and mix it with applesauce or dissolve the tablet in water before swallowing. Trulance tablets can also be taken by adults through a nasogastric tube or feeding tube with water.

Before you take this medicine

You should not use Trulance if you are allergic to plecanatide or if you have:

  • a blockage in your intestines.

Do not give this medicine to children under 6 years of age.

Avoid using Trulance on anyone under 18 years of age. In animal studies, plecanatide caused severe dehydration, resulting in death.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How should I take Trulance?

Take Trulance exactly as your doctor has told you. Follow all instructions on your prescription label. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

You can take Trulance with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole.

If you cannot swallow the tablet whole, you can crush it and mix it with a spoonful of water or applesauce. Swallow this mixture immediately. Do not save it for later use.

A Trulance tablet mixed with water can also be administered through a nasogastric (NG) tube using a catheter-tipped syringe. Read all patient information, medication guides and instructions for use provided to you. If you have any questions, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Store at room temperature, protected from moisture and heat.

Keep the tablets in the original bottle or blister pack until you are ready to take them. You can remove the packaging coil from inside the pill bottle. However, leave the package or canister with the moisture-absorbing preservative in the bottle.

Dosage information

Usual Adult Dose for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation:

3 mg orally once daily

Use: Treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC)

Usual Pediatric Dose for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation:

-Under 6 years: Contraindicated.
-Age 6 to under 18 years: Not recommended.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

An overdose of plecanatide is not expected to be dangerous. Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222 if someone accidentally swallows the medication.A child under 6 years old who takes this medicine may become severely dehydrated.

Follow your doctor's instructions regarding any food, drink, or activity restrictions.

If necessary, get emergency medical helpSigns of an allergic reaction to Trulance:hives; difficult breathing; Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Diarrhea is a common side effect of Trulance.

Stop using this medication and call your doctor immediately if your diarrhea is severe.

What other drugs will affect Trulance?

Other medications may interact with plecanatide, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all medications you are taking now and any medications you are starting or stopping taking.
