What is a typhoid vaccine?

  • People traveling to areas where typhoid fever is common (particularly Asia, Africa, and Central and South America);

  • People living with someone who is a carrier of typhoid fever; And

  • Laboratory workers who may come into contact with Salmonella typhi at work.

This vaccine exposes you to a small amount of the bacteria, causing your body to develop immunity to the disease.

A typhoid vaccine does not treat an active infection that has already developed in the body or prevent disease caused by bacteria other than Salmonella typhi.

Like any vaccine, the typhoid vaccine may not provide protection against disease in every person.
