Zomig (nasal)

Possible uses for Zomig

Many people find that their headaches disappear completely after using zolmitriptan. Other people find that their headaches are much less painful and that they can go about their normal activities even if the headache has not completely gone away. Zolmitriptan often relieves other symptoms that occur with migraine headaches, such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.

Zolmitriptan is not an ordinary painkiller. It does not relieve pain other than migraine headaches. This medicine is usually used in people whose headaches are not relieved by acetaminophen, aspirin, or other painkillers.

Zolmitriptan has caused serious side effects in some people, especially those with heart or blood vessel disease. Be sure to discuss with your doctor the risks of using this medication as well as the possible benefits.

This medicine is only available with a doctor's prescription.

Before using Zomig

When deciding whether to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the benefits it produces. This is a decision that you and your doctor will make. The following should be noted with this medicine:

Allergies

Tell your doctor if you have ever had an unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Also tell your doctor if you have other allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives or animals. For over-the-counter products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.

Pediatrics

Safety and effectiveness of zolmitriptan nasal spray in pediatric patients younger than 12 years have not been established

geriatrics

Studies conducted to date have not shown any geriatric-specific problems that would limit the benefit of zolmitriptan nasal spray in the elderly. However, older patients are at higher risk of kidney, liver, or heart disease, which may require caution and dose adjustment in patients receiving zolmitriptan nasal spray.

Breastfeeding

There are insufficient studies in women to determine the risk to infants when using this drug while breast-feeding. Weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks before taking this medication while breastfeeding.

Drug interactions

Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines can be used together, although interactions may occur. Correct use of Zomig

Use this medicine only as directed by your doctor. Do not use more of it, do not use it more often or for longer than prescribed by your doctor. Using too much zolmitriptan may increase the risk of side effects.

This medicine is for nasal use only. Do not let any of it get into your eyes or on your skin. If it does get on these areas, rinse it off immediately.

Do not use zolmitriptan for headaches that are different from your usual migraine attacks. Instead, ask your doctor.

To relieve your migraine as quickly as possible, use zolmitriptan as soon as the headache begins. Even if you experience warning signs of an impending migraine (an aura), you should wait until the headache starts before using zolmitriptan.

Ask your doctor in advance about other medicines you may be taking if zolmitriptan does not work. After taking the other medicine, contact your doctor as soon as possible. Headaches that are not relieved by zolmitriptan are sometimes caused by medical conditions that require other treatment.

If you feel significantly better after one dose of zolmitriptan, but your headache comes back or gets worse after a while, you can take another dose of zolmitriptan 2 hours after the first dose. Do not use more than 3 doses in 24 hours.

This medicine comes with a package leaflet. It is very important that you read and understand this information. Be sure to ask your doctor if you don't understand anything.

How to use the nasal spray:

Some examples of triptan medicines are almotriptan (Axert®), eletriptan (Relpax®), frovatriptan (Frova®), naratriptan (Amerge®), or sumatriptan (Imitrex®, Treximet®). If you have used zolmitriptan and your migraines get worse or become more frequent, ask your doctor.

Using zolmitriptan alone or in combination with other migraine medications for 10 or more days per month may cause headaches to worsen. You can keep a headache diary to record headache frequency and medication use.

Make sure your doctor knows about any other medicines you are taking. Taking zolmitriptan with some medicines can cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome. These include medicines used to treat depression, such as amitriptyline (Elavil®), citalopram (Celexa®), duloxetine (Cymbalta®), escitalopram (Lexapro®), fluoxetine (Prozac®, Sarafem®, Symbyax®), fluvoxamine (Luvox®). , olanzapine (Zyprexa®), paroxetine (Paxil®), sertraline (Zoloft®) or venlafaxine (Effexor®).
