Carmen Geiss has to go to the hospital while filming. The German entrepreneur suffers from inflammation of the pancreas.

Munich – “We were in the middle of filming here in Austria when I suddenly felt worse and had to stop,” said Carmen Geiss in an Instagram post. The TV celebrity and wife of Robert Geiss has inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). But how can the disease be recognized?

Filming stopped: Carmen Geiss suffers from pancreatitis

Inflammation of the pancreas can be divided into two forms: acute and chronic pancreatitis. According to the medical portal MSD Manual, acute inflammation develops within a very short period of time. Although it usually disappears after a few days, it can be life-threatening in an emergency.

      What is a pancreas?

The pancreas is an organ located across the upper abdomen. The gland produces, among other things, the vital hormones insulin and glucagon as well as enzymes that help digest food.

      These symptoms indicate acute pancreatitis:

      • Severe pain in the upper abdomen, which in many people radiates into the back
      • Nausea and vomiting
      • Upper abdomen may swell
      • Eyes are yellowish
      • Increased body temperature
      • Low blood pressure

For milder cases, those affected are given intravenous fluids and medication to relieve pain in the hospital, according to the MSD Manual. While patients can still eat, a low-fat diet is started. If they are no longer able to do this, food is administered through a tube.

Carmen Geiss in the hospital: Pancreatitis can have serious consequences

In severe cases, those affected have to go to an intensive care unit. If the pancreas is severely damaged or the inflammation has spread, the death rate is high, the specialist portal informs. Organ failure can occur. In chronic pancreatitis, on the other hand, the organ is repeatedly inflamed. This can lead to permanent damage and scarring.

Carmen Geiss is doing much better with her pancreatitis. “Fortunately, it was recognized in time and I was able to receive quick and good treatment,” explained the 59-year-old on Instagram. “This experience has shown me once again how important it is to take care of your health and have yourself checked regularly.” On Friday evening (August 9), she announced that she was back home in Monaco.

Alcohol, cigarettes and medications are possible triggers for inflammation of the pancreas

There are various causes that trigger pancreatitis. According to Zurich University Hospital, these include gallstones and high alcohol and nicotine consumption. But certain medications, autoimmune diseases and injuries can also cause acute pancreatitis. By making a few behavioral changes, you can dramatically reduce your risk of pancreatic cancer. (kas)
