The Risks of Mouthwashes: A New Perspective
For many people in Switzerland, using mouthwashes like Listerine Cool Mint is an everyday habit. These products are considered an important addition to daily dental care. But recent research from Antwerp raises questions about the safety of such products and sheds light on potential health risks.
What do the new findings show?
A group of researchers from the Antwerp Medical Faculty have found that the daily use of alcohol-containing mouthwashes over a period of three months increases the number of certain types of bacteria, namely:Fusobacterium nucleatumandStreptococcus anginosus, can settle increasingly in the mouth. These bacteria have been linked to serious diseases such as esophageal and colon cancer.
The role of alcohol in mouthwashes
The scientists suspect that the alcohol contained in many mouthwashes could be a major cause of the changed bacterial profile. Alcohol has, among other things, antimicrobial properties that fight harmful bacteria, but can also unbalance the natural oral flora. This could promote unwanted hospital germs.
Examples from the study
A total of 59 people took part in the study. The researchers emphasize that further research is necessary to establish clear connections and to comprehensively evaluate the results. Currently this is an initial indication and not definitive proof.
Manufacturers' reactions
The mouthwash's manufacturer, Kenvue, has responded to the findings. According to a spokesperson, there is no convincing evidence that using Listerine can cause cancer. The company points out that their product is one of the most thoroughly tested mouthwashes in the world and that they put the safety of their products first.
The responsibility of consumers
Given the new evidence, it is advisable for consumers to think about their use of mouthwashes. Non-alcoholic alternatives are available and could potentially be a safer choice. Before buying hygiene products, you should also take a closer look at the ingredients.
Raise awareness about oral health
The results of this study are an important stimulus for a discussion about oral hygiene in society. The public is encouraged to think critically about the potential risks of mouthwashes and to make informed decisions about their dental hygiene. Ultimately, making a conscious decision to use oral care products can lead to better oral health and a lower risk of serious illnesses.
