Aperol Spritz and health: The truth about the summer drink
Aperol Spritz: A summer treat or a health risk?
The refreshing Aperol Spritz, known for its bright orange color, is a popular summer drink but is currently under fire on social media. It is claimed that the dyes it contains could be carcinogenic. But what is really behind this rumor and what facts should you take into account when drinking Aperol?
The colors in Aperol
Aperol, a Campari Group brand, is often used as an aperitif or in cocktails. The liqueur owes its striking orange color to the two artificial colors E110 (yellow orange S) and E124 (cochineal red A), which are made from petroleum. These so-called azo dyes are controversial and can lead to pseudo-allergic reactions in certain people, especially people with aspirin allergies or general allergy susceptibility.
Are the dyes carcinogenic?
The use of the dyes in food is considered harmless because they are used in very small quantities. According to the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety, additives are only permitted if they are considered harmless to health. The European Food Safety Authority has also set maximum daily intake levels that must not be exceeded.
Studies on the dyes have yielded mixed results, with mice showing an increased risk of cancer at high concentrations. However, no direct connection has been proven in humans. However, some countries, such as the USA, are already more restrictive in their use of E124 and ban its use in food.
Alcohol as a potential health risk
In addition to the colorants, the alcohol content of Aperol should not be neglected. Experts point to an already established link between alcohol consumption and cancer risk, particularly in relation to esophageal and liver cancer. About four percent of annual cancer cases in Germany are directly attributed to alcohol consumption, which can lead to other potential health risks such as strokes, heart failure and alcohol addiction.
Overall, caution is advised when drinking Aperol Spritz, both in terms of the colorings it contains and the alcohol content. Moderate consumption and consideration of individual health aspects are crucial in order to minimize possible risks and to be able to enjoy the summer drink carefree.
