Fresh air in the intimate area: expert advice on underwear - Mainz gynecologist explains benefits and social aspects

Why going without underwear can be healthy – health

The debate about not wearing underwear divides opinion: some see it as unhygienic, while others see freedom in it. But from a medical point of view, it can definitely make sense to avoid panties etc. every now and then. Tobias Sanden, a renowned gynecologist from Mainz, explains in an interview the health benefits and the role of social expectations.

Why do we even wear underwear?

Wearing underwear is largely shaped by social norms, Sanden emphasizes. Although clothing itself does not provide any direct health benefits, it can often be perceived as uncomfortable. However, underwear also has practical aspects, especially during menstruation. Women who do not want to use alternatives such as tampons or menstrual cups can use pads, for which panties are ideal.

When is it advisable not to wear underwear?

The “bottomless” can be medically useful in certain situations, according to the expert. One of the main reasons is the opportunity for the skin to breathe. For certain health conditions, such as eczema or fungal infections, wearing underwear can worsen symptoms. Sanden also recommends wearing breathable clothing when exercising to protect the skin from irritation.

Is it unhygienic to go without underwear?

From a purely hygienic standpoint, avoiding tight underwear can reduce the risk of infection and skin irritation, explains Sanden. Tight underwear and synthetic materials can have a negative impact on the skin climate and promote infections. However, the doctor warns that you should avoid briefs entirely, as this could become a substitute for outerwear, which in turn brings its own risks.

With a view to health, everyone should decide individually whether and when it makes sense to avoid underwear. In addition to the medical aspects, personal preferences and social norms also play a role.
